Advice for Traveling in Your 20s and 30s

Your 20s and 30s are a perfect time to see more of the world. You're past the unstable college budget, but not quite at that tricky place where your family is growing or new health to-do's are sneaking up on you.

As an adult, this is the time to take advantage of the travel perks and resources that might not have been available to you when you were younger, and it's also a great time to still use up that energy for wildin' out on your new adventures!

Read on for tips to help you make the most of traveling in your 20s and 30s.

1. Use your connections and resources for travel perks.

You’ve probably unknowingly developed some connections and acquired some resources through your jobs and memberships that will help you with your travels. Check with your job, credit card accounts, and memberships to see what travel perks you have (tip: car insurance companies and credit card companies usually come with travel perks!). Also make use of your growing network of friends, co-workers and family for tips or connections.

2. TRAVEL WITH OTHERS or solo.

When you’re in college, it’s difficult to coordinate with friends with budgets that are too unstable. But when you’re an adult and you're thinking about trips to take in your 20s or 30s, you can more gracefully enjoy your own company, invite family along, or coordinate with friends to use your PTO that you've saved up for.

3. Do active stuff.

If you're traveling in your 20s and 30s, indulge in activities that require more energy and stamina. Right now you’re more able-bodied than you will be in 10 years, and right now, you’re still capable of taking on that sky-dive or deep-sea dive you’ve always wanted to do!

4. Wild & Free & adult.

You're at that perfect age to still go for a night out and make it out alive the next day, or go do some super adult things, like cooking up a feast with ingredients you’ve foraged yourself…!? Don’t skimp on the things that you really want to do or once dreamed of doing — this is the age to do it!

5. Invest in your peace of mind.

You might have more wiggle room in your finances at this age than you did when you were a teenager. You can now invest those extra $80 bucks into purchasing some travel insurance or purchasing that meal on the airplane, just to give you a more comfortable travel experience and some peace of mind.

6. Take advantage of being the perfect amount of relatable to all age groups.

Of course we're all relatable to someone, regardless of age, but when you're in your 20s and 30s, you can relate upwards (with 40+ year-olds who are dealing with careers, families and life things), and you can relate downwards (with teens and college students who are trying to discover the meaning of life). Embrace your approachable-ness, because everyone around could suddenly be a potential friend, or at least a great conversation!

7. You're not too old to travel, and no — it's not selfish or part of a mid-life crisis.

If you’re having difficulty deciding about trips to take in your 20s and 30s and whether to travel or not because of your age, ask yourself the following.

  • Are there people depending on you if you leave for a trip? Who are they and is there someone else / something else that can step in while you’re out?

  • Are you financially able to fund your trip without sacrificing your rent, bills or health? Remember, traveling doesn’t have to be expensive or extensive.

  • Can things survive, operate and function while you’re away?

  • Would you be okay with your decision 1, 5 and 8 years from now? And will you still be able to do this trip 1, 5, 8 years from now if you don't do it soon?

  • What is it that's holding you back?

However you choose to go about planning your next adventure, make sure you take full advantage of the beauty that comes with traveling in your 20s and 30s and embrace this unique period in your life!
