After a bite or two, you'll understand why this region is home to the world's highest concentration of Michelin-starred restaurants per capita. Our expedition will crisscross parts of northern Spain and southwestern France, defined by an exotic language, ancient folklore, and year-round festivals. From colorful Bilbao to historic Haro and seaside San Sebastian, by the end of the week, you'll be well-versed in the region's culture, history, and world-famous cuisine. 2024 2025 8 days/7 nights starting at $3,999 USD Limited single room upgrades starting from $999 are available and can be added during booking, subject to availability. These bite-sized treats could be anything from local fish to stuffed peppers secured atop a piece of bread with a toothpick—think of them as the Basque Country's take on tapas. The delectable hors d'oeuvres pair well with a glass of white wine and are often enjoyed on a txikiteo or Basque Country pub crawl. If those words sound challenging to pronounce, well, they are. Many Basques speak Euskera, the oldest European language and one with no known origins. After devouring pintxos , we'll head to dinner at one of the coolest spots in town. Yeah, the food's a big part of this trip, if you couldn't already tell. taste Day 2 - Bilbao Pintxos & Pelota Kick off day two with a bite at the hotel before hitting the courts for a pelota lesson. The fast-paced sport is the precursor to the more well-known jai alai and a favorite throughout Northern Spain. After working up a sweat, you’ll have some free time to explore before we channel our inner chefs and step into the kitchen. We tried pintxos on day one, but today we’re learning how to make them for ourselves in a private cooking class. After all, it’s essential to understand the intricacies of the region’s favorite food (especially when it’s so damn good). discover Day 3 - Bilbao MMM MICHELIN STARS After breakfast at the hotel, you can explore on your own or head up the coast for a hike back through time. We'll branch off from the rocky shore of Biscay along a serpentine stone wall to a 10th-century hermitage on the tiny islet of Gaztelugatxe—it's one of the most impressive sights in all of the Basque Country. In the early afternoon, we’re heading back to Bilbao to dine like never before. After all, it's only fitting that in a land of food this good, we find try to find the absolute best of the best. That’s right; it’s time to hit up some midday Michelin star magic. After a lunch to remember, take it easy in the afternoon, then head out for dinner and check out some Bilbao nightlife. Savor Day 4 - Haro wine in paradise We’re getting up early to wind our way south to wine country, so get ready to say ooh la la to La Rioja. Backed by the Iberian System mountain range, this is one of the country’s most beautiful and historic wine regions. Not only are you going to sip on some old-world wines made from grapes cultivated here for a thousand years, but you’re going to check out two of the region’s best vineyards because one world-class winery just won’t cut it. After tastings, tours, and lunch in the vineyards, we’re heading off to the old town of Haro for a night in one of Spain’s most important (and picturesque) wine villages. drink Day 5 - Haro / San Sebastian back to the sea Eat up before we hit the road. Sun-kissed San Sebastian is in our sights, and there’s no time to waste. Drop your bags, hit the beach, and head out to the tear-drop-shaped island of Santa Clara if you'd like. Or, kick back, relax, and take it easy; the day is free for you until we meet back up in the evening. That night, we're getting back to what we love most: chowing down on more local Basque Country cuisine. It's time to eat our way through San Sebastian's Old Town on a pintxo walking tour with a local guide giving us the backstory of every absurdly delicious dish. Try not to fill up too early (that's easier said than done); we'll be bouncing from one spot to the next, and every pintxo in town is somehow more delicious than the last. taste Day 6 - San Sebastian / Biarritz Surf's up We’ll take a day trip and cruise over to France’s Basque region to check out Biarritz and soak up the sun, sand, and waves. After all, what better way to round out a week of decadent food than a quick surf sesh? And don’t worry, this is an intro lesson, so it’s all in good fun. Even if you don’t get up, feel free to tell your friends back home tales of your time in the barrel. Your secret’s safe with us. ;) After you hit the waves, take to the sand for some much-needed R&R and grab some lunch with friends. As the sun starts to set on Biarritz, we’ll head back to San Sebastian where the night is free for you to do as you please. play cook Day 6 - San Sebastian / Biarritz Beachbound Today, we're making the short trip to France’s Basque region to explore Biarritz and soak up the sun, sand, and sights. Don’t forget your bathing suit; we recommend finding your perfect spot on this long stretch of golden sand and kicking back for some R&R. Take a dip and lounge on the edge of the Bay of Biscay before you grab some fresh ceviche, seafood pasta, and a glass of rosé along the boardwalk. We’ll head back to San Sebastian to unwind before you hit the town for dinner and drinks with friends. . enjoy Day 7 - San Sebastian STREETS, EATS, AND SUN Round out your San Sebastian stay by walking the promenade, checking out some more of the narrow, cobbled streets of the Old Town, or giving your Euskera a go at the shops in town. Spend today wandering, eating, and soaking up that last little bit of one of the continent’s most uniquely fascinating regions. For the history and culture lovers out there, we can’t recommend the Museo de San Telmo enough. Dedicated to Basque history, it’s home to more than 26,000 pieces of the past! And then, let’s eat. After a week of gastronomical adventures, it's only fitting that we spend our final night dining together on our never-ending quest to eat our way through the Basque Country. So pull up a chair; food may never taste this good again. BOOK! Day 8 - San Sebastian farewell Grab a final breakfast with friends before checking out. If you’ve got some time before your flight, do a little more exploring of one of Spain’s most unique towns. Toss down another pintxo or two; it’ll be tough to come by food this good wherever you return to. Or, if Europe’s still calling your name, pop over to Slovenia for some of the most jaw-droppingly beautiful, off the beaten track sights around or down to that lovely Med to party it up in Crete. "Everyone who has visited the Basque Country longs to return; it is a blessed land." - Victor Hugo FAST FACTS Fast Facts Just for Fun Folklore is incredibly important in Basque culture. According to one myth, giants know as Jentilaks used to roam the region. We’re not joking about the food; there are nearly 40 Michelin-starred restaurants in the Basque Country. Most Basque inhabitants are bilingual, speaking either Spanish and Euskera or French and Euskera. Trip notes While we can’t guarantee private rooms, you should book your trip earlier if you prefer one, as they usually fill up. This trip goes to both Spain & France. The Basque Country is not actually a country, it’s a region home to the Basque people. The Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao is a main attraction. When it opened in 1997, it led to a resurgence in tourism in the region. On European trips, we stay as close to historic city centers as possible. This means your accommodations will often be on the small side, quirky, and unique (we love this!). All activities are weather dependent; in the unlikely event that we are unable to run an activity, we will have a suitable alternative in place. More information regarding visa requirements and Covid restrictions can be found here . SEE DATES & BOOK LEARN MORE About basque country The greater Basque Country comprises the autonomous Spanish regions of the Basque Country and Navarre and the French region known as Northern Basque Country. The culture is highly unique and different from other surrounding regions, and the Basques are often regarded as the least assimilated of the Western European cultures. However, not everyone who lives in the region is actually a Basque. GOOD TO KNOW Basque Country in Spain was granted the status of Nationality in the 1978 constitution. Both Spain and France and thus the Basque region are on the Euro; however, a local currency known as the Eusko was launched in 2013 in the Basque’s French territory. In Spain, the Basque Autonomous Community ranks first in economic productivity nationwide. Flights Flights Fly into Bilbao (BIO) You'll need to be in Bilbao An by 2pm on Day 1. A mix of thrilling experiences by day and hot toddy bonding in local watering holes by night (after your daily sauna fix, of course), it’s an adventure like no other, one designed for all the intrepid spirits out there. It involves more moving around than some of our other trips and longer drives, but the scenery is captivating, so you can kick back and unwind. While we’ve included epic activities in each destination, you'll have more than enough time to explore the wonderful towns of Lapland on your own as well. 2024 2025 9 days/8 nights starting at $4,999 USD Limited single room upgrades starting from $849 are available and can be added during booking, subject to availability. If you get there early and you’re not in need of a nap, head out past traditional Finnish homes for a midday stroll through the charming city center. This is, of course, the home of jolly ole Saint Nick, so for some added magic, you can even check out Santa’s village and hop on a sleigh ride into the forest. In the evening, we’ll meet up for welcome drinks before our first taste of Lapland cuisine at our welcome dinner. Congrats, you’ve made it to the capital capital of Finnish Lapland and the entrance to the Arctic Circle! *Please note that this trip now starts in Rovaniemi sled Day 2 - Rovaniemi join the pack Get up and get ready for some fun; today, we’re finding the Lapland spirit by heading out into the rugged wilderness on a husky ride for the ultimate cold weather thrill. Harness your pack of pups, wind through pine forests and over frozen lakes, and take in the winter wonderland with the best Lapland guides around. Afterward, we’ll return for some lingonberry juice and much-needed and much-appreciated puppy playtime. In the evening, you’ll zip up in ridiculous (but warm!) dry suits to go ice floating beneath those endless Lapland stars, and if we're lucky, the Northern Lights will put on one of their spectacular shows. FLOAT Day 3 - Sinetta in glass houses Get up early to check out Santa’s village if you haven’t seen it yet, or head out on a morning snowshoe for some final Rovaniemi views. After that, we’re hitting the road and winding north for the glass igloos of Sinettä. Spend the afternoon sipping cocktails by the ice bar, then throw things back to a simpler time, head for the hills, pop on a sled, and set arctic-speed records. That evening, you can slow things down a notch and unwind in a private sauna, or, if you want more of that great outdoors, hop in one of the hot tubs to soak up Lapland’s beauty. In the evening, we’ll all get together for a group dinner and a taste of the Arctic. When it’s time to hit the hay, take it all in through the glass roof of your igloo hotel; weather permitting, you may even get your own private aurora borealis dance overhead—not a bad way to round off the day. Gaze Day 4 - Kiruna ON TO SWEDEN Say goodbye to Finland, it’s time to make our way to Kiruna, a mining town and the northernmost city in all of Sweden. After we drop our bags, it’s time for a bit of authentic indigenous culture—we’re taking a deep dive into the life of the Sami people, discovering how they survived the Arctic, and eating a traditional lunch (reindeer steaks by the fire, anyone?). This entire region has great snowpack for more than seven months of the year and massive expanses of wilderness to enjoy, so it's no surprise it’s become one of Lapland's premier destinations. Grab a bite with friends in the evening, and then, if you're lucky, you'll spot those magical northern lights once more. cruise Day 5 - Kiruna SNOWMOBILING No Lapland adventure is complete with a fair share of winter sports, so suit up, it's time to roll out into the great outdoors for some snowmobiling fun with our favorite Viking guides. Head out into the Swedish wilderness and ride on until you reach a cabin in the middle of nowhere. With the crew, you'll try some local delicacies (reindeer tongue, anyone?) and warm up before you hop back on your trusty ride and wind back along a new route home. The afternoon and evening are free to try cross country skiing, catch the arctic sunset, or head to the one English pub in town to mingle with the locals. Connect Day 6 - Tromsø Velkommen We’ll be heading out on the road again today, this time toward Tromsø, Norway, one of Lapland's cultural hubs. Framed by snowy peaks, surrounded by arctic waterways, and filled with historic wooden homes, this is one magical Norwegian destination. That evening, we'll all head out for drinks and a tour of what just may be the northernmost brewery on the whole planet. With more than enough taps to choose from, it's one fine way to say hey to Norway. After a few pints, hit the town with the crew as you keep your eyes peeled for more of that green magic in the sky. RELAX Day 7 - Tromsø Sauna at Sea After a bite, we’re all going to roll out together and spend the morning checking out the town on a private tour. You’ll have some free time before we get back together later in the afternoon, so keep exploring if you’re up to it. Try some local Norwegian specialties (hello, whale meat!) and grab a drink with the locals. Head to the water for a floating sauna session before dinner and dive into those frigid Norwegian waters between sweats if you dare. After that, it’s time for our farewell dinner—so eat up and share some last laughs with your new friends. BOOK! Day 8 - Tromsø Heippa And just like that, you’ve conquered Lapland. We hope you had one incredible time; this is a special place, and we really do love it. We recommend scheduling a later flight, so you have time to continue exploring the city of Tromsø. If you're one of the lucky ones and have got a few more days for adventuring, keep on going—Lapland and Scandinavia have tons to offer. Whether you're looking for some skiing holidays (there are more than enough mountains nearby to choose from), a local snowshoe tour company, or an overnight train, we're here to help. We’ll get things rolling in the hills of a nearby olive oil farm, where you’ll tour the facilities, learn the ins and outs of time-honored techniques, and settle down for some farm fresh eats (think cheeses, honey, and a few secret specialties). As this is one all-encompassing experience, you’ll even step into the kitchen to learn how to cook like a Cretan yourself. After dining locally, we’ll make the short ride over to Knossos Palace to check out the crumbling stone structures of Crete’s oldest Bronze Age ruins (they originated around 7,000 BC!). That evening, keep rolling on west to Rethymno, where we’ll get together for a delicious group dinner. FeAST Day 4 - Rethymno Arts Enclave Today, we’re cruising over to the magical little town of Margarites to mix in some art with our Cretan adventure. This colorful stone village just so happens to be the pottery capital of the island, so it’s only fitting that we’ll learn about ceramics, from the local raw materials to the finished product from some talented locals. After a brief intro, it’s time to get your hands dirty and get potting with the best of them. We’ll grab a delicious local lunch nearby, and then in the evening, wind our way back to Rethmyno, where you can head out for dinner and drinks with friends. UNWIND Day 5 - Rethymno Lakeside view Enjoy a morning of leisure and then we’re off once more, this time towards Crete’s largest freshwater lake. We’ll wind up on the golden shores of Lake Kournas around noon for an afternoon of swimming, paddleboarding, and relaxing on one of the island’s greenest lagoons. So kick back on a sunbed, grab a tropical cocktail, and soak up the good life. After a day of lakeside lounging and a traditional Greek lunch with one amazing lake view, we’ll make our way to Chania for one final seaside setup. The evening is free to explore the 14th-century Venetian harbor with new friends. EXPLORE Day 6 - Chania Cave to coast Fuel up on Greek coffee and a delicious breakfast before heading out to explore Southwestern Crete! We’ll get things started lounging along one of the island’s most spectacular sandy stretches as you discover the one special secret that has made this particular corner of coast so famous. And then, after some seaside chillin’, we’ll head up toward the rocky mountains that pepper this region, where you’ll say hello to the massive cliffside chambers of the Agia Sofia Cave and walk among enormous stalagmites and stalactites. From there, we’ll wind our way to one of the most famous monasteries on the whole island. This rocky 17th-century Eastern Orthodox beauty hangs high above the coast overlooking the Libyan Sea. After a day of exploring, head back to town; the night is yours. Taste Day 7 - Chania Country Feast Get ready to eat your way through Chania as we explore one delectably fresh farmer's market. In the morning, we'll meet up with our expert local guide, who will take us on our tour of the town to learn all about the region's local produce. After savoring the goods, we'll make our way downtown to continue through the shops and cafes of Chania's colorful streets. And then, in the afternoon, it's time for a drink or two; you've earned it. Aperol spritz, anyone? We'll all get together one last time that night to learn a traditional Cretan dance before we sit down for a delicious, music-filled farewell dinner. BOOK! A local guide will introduce you to the Stamp Trail—a uniquely Japanese journey leading you through meandering streets lined by Edo-era architecture and spiritual temples surrounded by three-hundred-year-old Japanese cedars. Mix in steaming pools at a mystical cooking onsen, and you’ll get the idea: in Nozawa, nature’s everywhere. Unwind with some local gin (made with Nozawa’s own crystal-clear freshwater) and then hop into an onsen yourself to round out the afternoon with the crew in relaxing style. That evening, we’ll kick back in our traditional Ryokan (which has been around for 18 generations!) for mouthwatering local delicacies and umami flavors. RETREAT Day 6 - Nozawaonsen, Tokyo Nature to Nightlife Breakfast is an authentic spread whipped up by our expert chef at the Ryokan, so eat up before you check out the rest of Nozawa. In the afternoon, catch a train and ride out of the mountains and into the neon future. Hello, Tokyo! Welcome to one of the largest, most exciting cities on earth, where the term “sensory overload” has never meant so much. Book your arrival flight into Kansai International Airport , or Osaka International Airport , and take public transportation to Kyoto; Book your departure flight out of Tokyo from either the Narita International Airport or the Haneda International Airport . In Japan, you'll find everything from hotel rooms to portion sizes to be smaller. Public transportation: Japanese trains are very efficient, and traffic in the major cities is bad, so this whole trip is done on public transport. Try to pack lightly. When visiting Japan, we stay as close to historic city centers as possible. This means your accommodations will often be on the small side, quirky, and unique (we love this!). Cherry Blossom season usually falls between April and May. June is the rainy season, but it usually does not rain every day Seafood is a staple of Japanese cuisine and can be found in many dishes. If you are a selective eater, please be aware that meals will often include seafood. Note for vegetarians, vegans, and gluten-free: In Japanese culture, foods without the actual meat of an animal (such as beef broths) are considered vegetarian. This may present difficulties for travelers with dietary restrictions, as it is hard to adjust foods or find foods that don't use grains or fish. While your guide can help you understand what you're ordering, it will be up to you to do your research on foods that meet your dietary preferences. We cannot guarantee that you will be able to find meals that fit your needs during the group meals that are included. All activities are weather-dependent; in the unlikely event that we are unable to run an activity, we will have a suitable alternative in place. More information regarding visa requirements and Covid restrictions can be found here . * The Japan Trip follows a 91-Day Cancellation Policy, different from other FTLO Trips about Japan Japan is home to a rich cultural heritage steeped in tradition. Its history, spanning millennia, melds ancient practices with modern innovations. The nation reveres traditions like tea ceremonies, sumo wrestling, and cherry blossom festivals while also placing huge importance on cutting-edge technology and urban sophistication. Major cities pulse with energy, housing futuristic skyscrapers alongside historic temples. GOod to know The national language is Japanese. The currency in Japan is the yen. Everything is very, very small. Though cleverly designed, expect small spaces for accommodation. Japan is one of the most expensive places to visit in the world, and therefore will not be a luxury trip, despite the higher costs. Japanese cuisine is delicious, creative, and stunning, but it will definitely challenge your palette’s comfort zone. Japanese culture is completely different from anything else you’ve experienced before; be ready to expand your horizons. This trip will offer a mix of ancient and modern, old and new. Manners are important in Japan and showing respect, as you would in any country. It is generally a quieter country, despite bustling cities and tourist-heavy areas. With thundering herds of migrating wildebeests and infectious rhythms of Swahili tunes, Kenya is an experience like nothing else. After touching down just outside of Nairobi, hop in a cab and make your way to our hotel in the center of the capital. More than 40 ethnic groups call this city home, and with Kikuyo, Luo, and Kalenjin influences (just to name a few!), this cultural melting pot is just as diverse as the nation’s wildlife. Settle in and soak up the scene over drinks with the crew before we head out to a nearby restaurant for a taste of local cuisine. We know getting to Kenya isn’t exactly quick or easy, so we left the night free—you can grab some early shut eye or check out the Nairobi nightlife if you’re feeling up to it. learn Day 2 - Nairobi, Maasai Mara Tea Partay We’re getting up early and heading west for some of the most staggering scenes in Africa—Maasai Mara, here we come! Don’t worry if you’re still a bit jet-lagged or if you had one too many Tuskers last night; we’ll be stopping at a working tea farm for a mid-morning pick-me-up. Fuel up on some much-needed caffeine in the rolling highlands as you learn the inner workings of one of the country’s most important industries, and then grab lunch with a view. Imagine golden savannah light and crisp, clean air filled with the sounds of African wildlife. Don’t worry about setting an alarm—your new neighbors will let you know when it’s time to get up. Today, we’re headed out on a full-day game drive in 4x4s, with safari guides leading the search for the Big Five (elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion, and leopard). Though these are the most iconic creatures in Africa’s most legendary land, they won’t fill the lion’s share of your day’s sightings. The Mara’s sprawling grasslands are also home to giraffes, cheetahs, and watering holes that sustain more than 32,000 zebras and 37,000 wildebeests! As the sun begins to set, we’ll head to camp for dinner and fireside stories underneath clear African skies. safari Day 4 - Maasai Mara Natural Habitat Rise and shine, and get ready for another day of feeling blissfully inconsequential as we hit the park for round two. Today, we're heading deeper into these wild plains, past termite mounds that litter the horizon like miniature apartment blocks. We’ll drive through groves of Acacia Trees shading sunny landscapes, where evocatively named plants like the African Bushman's Hat, Whistling Thorn, and Torch Lily are constant reminders that these untamed grasslands are far, far from home. Just make sure you keep your camera ready, in the Mara, you never know what’s around the next bend. We'll head back toward camp for another group dinner followed up by a campfire where you can argue over who's got the best shot at a Nat Geo cover photo. immerse Day 5 - Maasai Mara Warrior Culture Today, we’re switching gears from epic wildlife to warriors who share a deep connection with these famous landscapes. We’ll head to a nearby camp to spend the day and night with a local Maasai tribe, the semi-nomadic community who’ve roamed the Mara for centuries. Immerse yourselves in this self-sustaining society as you learn about traditional beadwork, the symbolic meaning behind facial scars, and a warrior way of life. You’ll even get the chance to visit a school and discover what it’s like to grow up in the Kenyan savannah. As thousands of Maasai men, women, and children still call this region home, the camp plays an integral role in society, actively supporting local communities through education and work projects. That evening, at the foot of the lush, spiritual Loita Hills, you’ll forge connections that transcend language and culture as you discover the importance of these sacred lands. mesmerize Day 6 - Maasai Mara, Nairobi Cradle of Humanity Grab breakfast and say “ole sere” (goodbye) to your new Maasai friends before we hit the road back to the capital. Along the way, we’ll stop off at the Great Rift Valley, a geological marvel that stretches 6,000 kilometers from the Middle East to Mozambique. Inhabited by humans for millions of years and home to countless archaeological sites and ancient settlements, this is one of the cradles of human civilization. After we get back to the capital, head out for lunch and a tour of the town with a local crew as you discover the city through the lens of these enterprising teens who raised themselves on Nairobi’s streets. That night, sample the diverse cuisine that this place is known for—maize porridge Ugali and vegetable Sukuma Wiki—before you hit the bars in Westlands playing genge, Nairobi’s home-grown brand of hip hop. relax Day 7 - Nairobi, Lamu ISLAND TIME Today’s our last day in the capital, and your morning is free to check out the rest of Nairobi. If you’re after souvenirs, scour the local flea markets that pop up throughout the city every day of the week. We’ll head east to Lamu Island, our final stop in Indian Ocean paradise that afternoon. A labyrinth of narrow winding streets, coral stone homes, and ancient mosques, the timeless little town at the center of it all is full of Swahili tradition. Beyond the village, pristine beaches with powdery white sand fringe the coastline and lush mangrove forests teem with wildlife. We’ll kick off our balmy, breezy, beachy final leg in style at a group dinner as we feast on the freshest ingredients harvested by local farmers and fishermen. ROAM Day 8 - Lamu Swahili Cooking You're officially on island time, so spend your day relaxing with the Kenyan crew and soak up some rays any way you like. If you're looking for sand between your toes and a tropical concoction or two, head out for Shela Beach's laid-back vibes and dreamy views. If you're into history, don't miss the old town; it's a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the oldest Swahili settlement along the East African coast. Between the two, just make sure you dive into Swahili cuisine at a seaside restaurant somewhere along the way (pro tip: there's even one floating on the water). That'll give you a head start on the evening's festivities. That night, we’re headed into the kitchen for Swahili home cooking, with a Lamu island local leading the way. Learn how to make everything from samaki wa kupaka (fish-marinated coconut curry) to viazi karai (deep-fried spicy potato balls)! sail Day 9 - Lamu sET saIL Grab breakfast if you’ve got any space left over from last night’s Swahili spread, and then head for the sea; it’s time to feel the wind in your hair and experience true paradise. Sail away with the amazing group of friends you’ve met on this wild adventure and soak up Indian Ocean vibes aboard our own private dhow (a traditional wooden sailboat). Cruise past thick mangroves and powdery white beaches, and, if you’re lucky, you’ll spot a sea turtle unwinding like the rest of us. We’ll make stops in Matondoni, a fishing community where dhows are built, and Kipungani, a tranquil, traditional coastal village for some more Swahili magic along the way. That evening, it’s time for one last meal in turquoise paradise. Eat up, drink up, and raise a glass to Kenya. indulge Day 10 - Lamu, Nairobi Kwaheri! Share a final breakfast with friends at the hotel before we head to the airport and say goodbye. Today, we're flying back to the capital, where you can catch your connection or keep on traveling the Mother Continent. It is a long haul home, so we recommend the second option (if you've got time to spare)! Kenya's full of great parks; check out Lake Nakuru National Park and its flamingos or the rare species in Samburu National Reserve if you want more wildlife. If you're a culture tripper, head west toward Morocco for legends and stories beneath the Saharan sky. It's been one unreal adventure! We've seen landscapes and seascapes that most people only dream of, and we hope you've had the trip of a lifetime! Book! Take in those wild, rugged views and get to know your new travel buddies. On the way, we’ll check out some of the most amazing viewpoints you can imagine, pass through a historic gold mining town, and then stop for a traditional South African lunch in Graskop, the gateway to the incredible rugged green-clad cliffs and valleys of Byde River Canyon. That evening, we'll arrive at our first camp in a quiet nature reserve deep in South Africa's bushlands. We'll have an African dinner under the stars, followed by some much-needed R&R. GLAMP Day 3 - Kapama Game Reserve Giant Encounter Today, we're getting up early, taking breakfast for the road, and riding over to the extraordinary Kapama Game Reserve for some personal time with Africa's friendliest giants. We'll spend the morning learning about a group of elephants who were orphaned, rescued, and then taken in by the fascinating Jabulani herd. It's a remarkable experience and by far the most ethical way to get up close with the continent's biggest animals. From there, we're hopping over to a nearby endangered animal rehab center to check in on some of the bush's most beautiful species. In the afternoon, we'll get back to camp, where you can spend the rest of the day unwinding by the pool or practicing yoga with a view before we sit down to a group dinner. TRACK Day 4 - Greater Kruger game TIME We'll get up bright and early and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee and a rusk (a South African cookie) before heading out on our morning game drive. If you'd like, you're welcome to sleep in and listen to the hyenas cackle from the comfort of your warm bed. When we get back to camp, grab a full breakfast and then lounge it up. You can swim in the pool, bask in the sun, or keep an eye out for new visitors at the watering hole right out front of our lodge. After a late lunch, we'll head out on another afternoon game drive. Then it's one more breathtaking African sunset and sundowner session before you return to camp for dinner with friends and late-night laughs around the campfire. ASCEND Day 5 - Greater Kruger YEah BRAA Today, we'll head into Kruger National Park and begin scouting the more secluded roads of the endless savannah. You'll explore a variety of habitats and come face to face with some absolutely mind-blowing local wildlife along the way. Keep your eyes peeled for giraffe, zebra, warthog, and buffalo! While this is certainly one of the most exciting and action-packed national parks in the entire world, your odds of seeing the most wildlife are best if you trek quietly. We'll stop for lunch at one of the park's largest rest camps before continuing on deeper into the Kruger. By mid-afternoon, we will check into our final camp, and then, after sunset, we'll gather together in the boma for some braai (mouthwatering South African BBQ). rest Day 6 - Kruger, Cape Town TO CAPE TOWN We'll kick off our final day in the bush with a walk through the savannah and a rendezvous with a few zebras or giraffes. While we're at it, learn more about the region's plants and lesser-known critters before we head to camp for breakfast. From there, we're heading to the airport to catch our flight to the big city. South Africa boasts more than just national parks, and it's about time to mix in a bit of Cape Town magic. Your cozy little neighborhood hotel is walking distance from the center of all the excitement, so settle in, then hit the rooftop for a drink and a breathtaking view of the city as it twinkles beneath Table Mountain. The night is free for you to explore Cape Town with the crew. DISCOVER Day 7 - Cape Town Past & present No visit to Cape Town is complete without a history tour. After breakfast, you'll explore the city's most iconic sights with a Cape Malay guide who knows them intimately. You'll dive into a past that's both fascinating and tragic. It's an important story and one that covers the first inhabitants (San or "bushmen"), the arrival of the Dutch and then the British, slavery, apartheid, Nelson Mandela, and Robben Island. After the tour, we'll even visit the house of a Bo Kaap resident for a homemade lunch of traditional Malay cuisine. In the afternoon, if you're up for it, you'll have the chance to hike Lion's Head for some of the best views of Cape Town (we'll even hike the secret, less crowded path for the ultimate adventure). PLAY Day 8 - Stellenbosch Vineyard Views Today, we'll take a day trip out of the city to visit South Africa's stunning wine country. We'll avoid the tourist hotspots and visit smaller, more intimate vineyards that are all about producing the best wines around. Start your morning off with some South African sparkling wines paired with macaroons in one of the most scenic locations you could imagine before moving on to a 6-wine experience beneath towering mountains. We'll soak up some of that vino on a picnic lunch and then get back to it with one final stop on this epic vineyard tour. The rest of the evening is yours to enjoy. Grab some dinner with friends back in Cape Town and check out the nightlife if you're up for it. REFRESH Day 9 - Cape Town Cruising the cape After breakfast, we'll leave for a full-day Cape Peninsula tour. The scenic drive will wind through coastal mountains, cliffsides, and historic fishing villages. We'll explore untouched, rugged expanses and even visit Africa's only penguin colony. In the afternoon, we'll stop for lunch in the scenic Cape Town suburbs. Take in the sights and eat up with the crew before we round out a day by twisting along spectacular cliffside roads that hang out in jaw-dropping fashion over the sea. Our excursion will end back at the hotel. You can head out to explore Cape Town's restaurants and nightlife if you're in the mood or grab an early night's sleep. SIP Day 10 - Cape Town TOP OF THE TOWN The morning's free to roam the town with friends. If you missed the hike to Lion's Head a few days back, make sure to check it out—we can't stress enough how mind-blowing these views are. You'll have the rest of the afternoon to wander the streets of Cape Town. Consider strolling the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront for some dockland drinking, eating, and shopping. In the evening, we'll meet up at one of the prettiest beaches in Cape Town for our last sundowner session together. Then, we'll head to a vibey restaurant for a farewell dinner and see where our night in town takes us. BOOK Day 11 - Cape Town So long south africa Today's the last day of one epic South Africa vacation, and we'll have one final group breakfast before we say our goodbyes. If you've got more time to spend in this amazing city, there are plenty of art galleries, bars, and restaurants to keep you busy. Alternatively, you could pop back out to Stellenbosch for a day and soar over the mountains on a hot-air balloon ride. Or, if you want to dive even deeper into the heart of the Mother Continent, check out our epic Kenya adventure! We hope you had one amazing adventure through this spectacular country! "It always seems impossible until it's done." -NELSON MANDELA FAST FACTS Fast facts Just for fun There are eleven official languages of South Africa. The Kruger National Park is home to over 12,000 elephants, 27,000 African Buffalo, 1,000 leopards, and lots of other beautiful wildlife. Drivers use the left-hand side of the road in South Africa. Trip notes Going on safari means early mornings. Animals are most active in the hours after sunrise and before sunset, and the game drives follow this schedule. You do not have to take part in any drives you do not wish to do, but we highly recommend them. Exploring the African bush and getting so close to real, wild animals in their natural habitat is an incredible experience! Any free time will be spent in the confines of the camp, but it is incredibly relaxing! Please note that our bush camps are less like traditional tented camps and more like modern rooms with beds, ensuite showers, and wash facilities. Though they’re located amidst incredible nature, they include the amenities you’d expect in a hotel. While we can’t guarantee private rooms, you sho uld book your trip earlier if you prefer one, as they usually fill up. Please take in consideration that domestic airlines in South Africa have a luggage allowance of 6kg for hand luggage, and 21kg f or checked luggage . And by ancient, we do mean ancient—we’re talking about a region inhabited for thousands of years. Yeah, it’s a lot to wrap your head around. Kick back with your first mezcal of the week and marvel at the scenery as you learn about the Zapotecs, the Aztecs, and Spanish colonization. After that, you’ll head out for your first bite of Oaxaca with the team. Wander Day 2 – Oaxaca City / Teotitlán Colorful culture Get up early and grab breakfast on the way to the Sierra Madre Mountains to check out Hierve el Agua. After a bit of a hike through tough terrain, you’ll discover that what looks like a towering waterfall is actually a calcified rock formation spilling out from minty green hilltop springs. Make sure to bring a swimsuit; you’re more than welcome to pop in one of nature’s infinity pools and soak up some of the region’s most impressive panoramic views. Up next, you’re hitting the road and heading to Teotitlán, a village founded by indigenous Zapotec people in the 1400s. Grab lunch with a local family and learn the ins and outs of the arts and culture that have made this place famous. That afternoon, you’ll head back to Oaxaca City, where the evening is free for you to explore with friends. Admire Day 3 – Oaxaca City Taste of the town Get up and grab breakfast with friends at the hotel; you’ve got quite the day ahead. Today, you’re heading into the kitchen to cook as a Oaxacan. And you’re not just learning about traditional ingredients and spices (though we assure you, those are delicious); you’re also giving it a go with traditional Oaxacan culinary tools. After fueling up on local grub, it’s time to jet off to the past over at Monte Albán with our archeologist guide for a sunset tour of the 2500-year-old pyramids and palaces that once made up Oaxaca’s political, social, and economic center. Eat through the present, walk through the past, then kick back in the evening and relax with the crew. Taste * Take the morning to wander Oaxaca’s magical mural-lined streets before we roll out for a tasty excursion to discover the state’s most famous export. Queue up the mezcal. More than 70% of Mexico’s mezcal comes from the Oaxaca region, and today, you’ll be discovering exactly why. After lunch at a nearby distillery or “palenque,” we’ll be diving into the production process from agave plant through that beautiful finished product. So don’t be shy; give those homemade goods a go and discover the magic of mezcal. In the afternoon, check out a few of the local markets in Oaxaca’s historic center before we all meet up for a final farewell dinner. Day 4 – Oaxaca City Mmm Mezcal savor Hit the hotel breakfast one last time with your crew, and then hit the road back to the real world. From mountains to sea, there’s plenty more to explore in the region, so keep on going. Adios amigos! Day 5 – Oaxaca City Hasta Luego "Art is a means of expression that must be understood by everybody, everywhere. It grows out of the earth, the textures of our lives, and our experience.” – Rufino Tamayo FAST FACTS Fast facts JUST FOR FUN When we say Oaxaca is old, we mean it. It’s been inhabited since 11,000 B.C. There are 16 indigenous groups in Oaxaca. That’s more than any other state in Mexico. In Oaxaca, on December 23rd giant radishes are carved into characters as part of radish scenes. The Night of the Radishes was made official in 1897. TRIP NOTES While we can’t guarantee private rooms, you sho uld book your trip earlier if you prefer one, as they usually fill up. Pack carefully; the highs in Oaxaca reach into the 80s every month of the year, but nights can be chilly as the city sits a mile high. Mezcal is part of the Oaxaca experience, but you’ll never need to drink if you don’t want to. This is an "active trip" with a fair amount of walking. More information regarding visa requirements and Covid restrictions can be found here . SEE DATES & BOOK LEARN MORE About Oaxaca Oaxaca de Juárez is the capital of the state of Oaxaca in southwestern Mexico, though sometimes it’s referred to as Oaxaca City or just Oaxaca. Although both Oaxaca and Mexico City are known for their cuisine, history, and local culture, Oaxaca City couldn’t be farther from the Mexican capital. The streets are calm, the buildings are short, and the culture is much more relaxed in general. GOOD TO KNOW Oaxaca is one of the safest cities and states in all of Mexico. The Mexican peso is the currency. While Spanish is spoken by the vast majority of those in Oaxaca, there are 16 indigenous languages spoken in the region as well.
