  • The Budapest, Vienna, and Prague Trip - Small Group Travel

The Budapest, Vienna & Prague trip For the love of EUROPE BY TRAIN SCHNITZEL & SACHERTORTE ROYAL PALACES COFFEE CULTURE LIFE ON THE DANUBE SPIRES IN THE SKY RUIN BARS BEER SPAS MOZART MAGIC THREE COUNTRIES, THREE CAPITALS BUDAPEST, VIENNA & PRAGUE DAY BY DAY TRIP NOTES REVIEWS LEARN MORE SEE DATES & BOOK WHAT TO EXPECT Our small group trip to Budapest, Vienna, and Prague caters to travelers in their 20s and 30s looking to cross off the trifecta of Central Europe’s cultural treasures. Over eight days, we’ll be hopping trains and riding the rails between three of the coolest capitals on the continent. First stop, Budapest—a city where you can soak away your worries in thermal baths and then sip craft cocktails in ruin bars while deciding if you want goulash or langos for a midnight snack. We’ll cruise the Danube and explore the countryside before making our way to Austria for a taste of Vienna’s opulence: classical tunes in Mozart’s hometown and the Habsburg high life. Eventually, we’ll wind up on Prague’s cobbled streets to wrap things up in storybook fashion. After crisscrossing the Old Town, throw down a few pilsners with the locals and cheers to one epic adventure. For culture trippers, this is a cross-continental adventure into the heart of Europe and an immersive experience through three of the region’s most exciting countries. LEARN MORE SEE DATES & BOOK 8 days/7 nights starting at $3 ,499 USD Limited single room upgrades starting from $659 are available and can be added during booking, subject to availability. Payment can be broken down into a $500 deposit + 3 additional installments. Included 7 night accommodations in shared rooms (single room upgrade available on request) Meals: 7 breakfasts, 3 lunches, 4 dinners Train tickets: Budapest to Vienna and Vienna to Prague 24 hour public transportation tickets in Vienna and Prague Guided historic Budapest walking tour Traditional Hungarian cooking class led by a local chef Evening Danube River cruise with views of Budapest’s historic skyline Károlyi Castle experience in Hungary’s countryside Local wine tasting in a traditional family-run Hungarian vineyard Classical Viennese concert in one of Vienna’s oldest concert halls Visit to Habsburg’s opulent summer residence, Schönbrunn Palace Walking tour through Prague’s old streets Unique Czech beer spa experience FTLO Trip Leader *Activities are weather-dependent on all Budapest, Vienna, Prague trips; in the unlikely event that we are unable to run an activity, we will have a suitable alternative in place. not included Flights to Budapest and from Prague Mandatory trip insurance Meals not mentioned (Budget around $200) Incidental expenses more details day by day *Itinerary is subject to change Day by day Day 1 - Budapest Boo-Da-Pesht Originally split by the Danube into Buda and Pest before uniting in 1873, Budapest is a one-of-a-kind capital with neoclassical architecture, paprika-rich cuisine, and a persona that’s just the right amount of rough around the edges. Kick things off near the city center on the eastern Pest side of the river with a crew of new friends and welcome drinks to get your Central European adventure started right. From there, we’re off to the lively old streets of the Jewish Quarter for our welcome dinner and your first taste of Hungarian cooking. After a bite, head out for a nightcap (extra points if you try a shot of pálinka, a local fruit brandy guaranteed to give you a warm Hungarian welcome), or take a romantic stroll along the Danube as you wander back to the hotel. Wander Day 2 - Budapest Crosstown Cuisine After catching up with the crew, we’re off to see Budapest and all her beauty on a walking tour. We’ll check out everything from the bell towers of St. Stephen’s Basilica to Fisherman’s Bastion and the Medieval architecture of the Castle Quarter. You’ll need a bite after all that, so up next, it’s time for a cooking class led by a rockstar local chef to whip up Hungarian specialties like chilled soups and sweet desserts. The afternoon’s free, but as this is the City of Baths, it’s only fitting that you head to Széchenyi for a soak. Round out the day in romantic fashion with a Danube River cruise for golden views of the historic skyline before we head toward Budapest’s famous ruin bars to check out the graffitied grit that sets this capital apart (think dive bars taken to a whole new level). marvel Day 3 - Budapest wine Country Today, we’re heading out of the city and journeying through Hungary’s small towns for a deep cut of the country. Get things started in the land of Counts and Barons as we take a private tour of the massive 19th-century Károlyi Castle and its grounds. We’ll grab a bite after exploring the lifestyles of the rich and famous, and then it’s time for a few glasses of Hungarian wine at a nearby family-run vineyard. Cheers to our last day in Budapest, or as the Hungarians say, Egészségedre (no worries if you botch that one). You’ll get back to the hustle and bustle that evening, where your night is free. If you didn’t figure it out yesterday, Budapest hits a whole new level when the sun sets. Hit up a jazz club with the crew or roam back to more of those eclectic ruin bars. indulge Day 4 - Budapest & Vienna A Moment for Mozart After a leisurely morning in Budapest, we’re heading west to Vienna for Mozart, Wienerschnitzel, and the second leg of our central European excursion. Try your first Sachertorte (Austria’s delicious chocolate cake) and stroll the romantic old streets for an experience that is oh-so opulent. With almost theatrically ornate Baroque buildings everywhere you look, Vienna’s the suave, sophisticated big brother of our capital trio: this is where Freud pontificated, Beethoven composed, and the FTLO crew hits high class. This is also the City of Music, home to the greats of 18th and 19th-century classical tunes. So, after meeting up with everyone for a pre-show dinner, we’ll head to one of the city’s oldest concert halls for a bit of Mozart magic performed by an incredible orchestral ensemble. Appreciate Day 5 - Vienna Kings and Queens Now that you’ve reached high society, it’s time to step back in time. Today, we’re heading to Schönbrunn Palace—a marvel of European grandeur—to immerse ourselves in the lavish fairytale lifestyle of a bygone era. Originally a 17th-century hunting lodge for the Habsburgs, this giant Baroque estate (a UNESCO site) is the pinnacle of old-school wealth. Explore historic, luxurious rooms filled with priceless works of art and act like you belong in the Great Gallery or the amazing Blue Chinese Salon. After mingling with the royal palace upper crust, we’ll need to recharge, so we’ll kick it local with your first Wienerschnitzel at a traditional Austrian tavern. The afternoon and evening are free to roam; take a spin on the world’s oldest ferris wheel at Prater Park or check out the scene at Rathausplatz. connect Day 6 - Vienna & Prague Czech it Out After a bite at the hotel, we’re heading west on the rails past dense forests and meandering rivers en route to what may be the most picturesque city on the whole continent. Between the red-tiled roofs, Gothic cathedrals, and Renaissance Palaces, the Czech capital is unfairly, almost unrealistically, spectacular. Grab a hometown pilsner at one of the leafy green beer gardens before you meet up with a local for a tour of the town. With our expert guide, you’ll eat and drink like the Czechs, marvel at the Old Town’s 15th-century astronomical clock, and twist through a labyrinth of secret Castle District streets way beyond the tourists. Prague’s home to some of the finest beer in the world, so cap off the evening prowling for pints through cozy streets with the crew. learn Fast facts “To travel by train is to see nature and human beings, towns and churches, and rivers, in fact, to see life.” - Agatha Christie FAST FACTS Day 7 - Prague Beer Bath After laughing off a late night and soaking up one too many drinks with a hearty breakfast, we’ll get right back to what Prague does best: beer! However, today’s a special day, so we won’t just be drinking a pint or two; we’ll be bathing in it. Yup, join the rest of the crew for a unique Czech experience—unwind in a tub of suds (there’s a wine option, too!), and let the beer bath soothe your senses. You’ll even follow it up with a salt cave session to rejuvenate your soul. Your afternoon’s free, so after that boozy therapy, take a stroll along the Vltava River or dive into Czech history at the National Museum. That night, we’re all meeting up for a delicious farewell dinner at one of our favorite spots to round out an amazing week. soak Day 8 - Prague Eurotripped Three countries, three capitals, one epic adventure! In just eight days, you’ll have crossed Central Europe with a crew of new friends and, in doing so, traveled over 500 kilometers by train. You’ve explored hidden old town streets, marveled at grand palaces, and soaked up Mozart’s finest tunes. If you’ve got more time to spare in Prague, cross the Charles Bridge once more for some final views of one of our favorite romantic European capitals. Or, if you’ve got even more time to travel, consider a trip to Portugal for some more culture or a fast-paced outdoor experience in Iceland! Just for fun King Stephen I of Hungary was so important that his mummified right hand is kept in St. Stephen’s Basilica! Visit Vienna for croissants. The delectable breakfast treat actually originated in Austria, not France. On average, Czechs drink more than 180 liters of beer per person each year. That’s the most in the world! Trip notes There are limited single rooms available on our Budapest, Vienna, Prague trips. Book early if you prefer one, as they usually fill up. More information regarding visa requirements and Covid restriction s on the trip can be found h ere . SEE DATES & BOOK LEARN MORE About Budapest, Vienna, and Prague The capitals of Hungary, Austria, and the Czech Republic each boast their own unique charm and character. Budapest straddles the Danube River, offering a diverse blend of architectural styles, historic thermal baths, and lively ruin bars. Vienna, Austria's imperial jewel, exudes elegance with its grand palaces, classical music legacy, and coffeehouse culture. Prague, the Czech Republic's fairytale city, captivates with its beautiful buildings, medieval streets, Gothic architecture, and lively beer gardens. Together, these cities form a cultural triangle rich in history, art, and culinary delights. Good to Know In Budapest, the currency is the Hungarian Forint (HUF). In Vienna, the currency is the Euro (EUR). In Prague, the currency is the Czech Koruna (CZK). Hungarians speak Hungarian, Austrians speak German, and the Czechs speak Czech. Public transport in all three cities is fantastic. Some smaller shops and attractions in all three cities may be closed on Sundays and Mondays. Not only is this trip deeply cultural, but as we get around by train, it’s a more sustainable way to see Central Europe. Tipping is not required, but 10% is customary in any of these cities. Your questions answered Heading 1 ABOUT FTLO BOOKING LAST MINUTE BOOKINGS TRIP PREP ON A TRIP HEALTH ON TRIPS About FAQs ABOUT FTLO FAQs What is FTLO all about? Why join an FTLO trip? Who goes on FTLO trips? What's up with Gal spots and Guy spots? Is an FTLO Trip right for me? Are these luxury trips? How big are groups? Are FTLO trips suitable for LGBTQIA+ travelers? Ok, I'm in. Now what? What is FTLO? 1. what is ftlo all about? The name pretty much sums it up. We started For The Love of Travel, for the love of travel - for the incredible, life-changing experiences, the magical moments, the forever memories, and the endless smiles that traveling creates. And we wanted to make it easier for busy young people to do more of it in an authentic, sustainable way. Travel isn't something you can only do on a gap year or when you're retired. We see it as an integral part of life- a necessary and continuing education that deserves as much devotion as academia. We curate fun, well-rounded itineraries and take care of the major details to give you more time to explore, experience, learn and connect with the people around you and places you're in. That way, you can have an authentic cultural experience and a vacation. Why join FTLO? 2. Why join an FTLO trip? Fun. You'll be spending a week or moreexploring a foreign country while getting to know a bunch of cool people your age. It's a blast. Hassle-free. We've already taken care of the logistics so you don't have to spend hours planning or waste your vacation time dealing with unforeseen issues, spending money you didn't budget for, or stressing about, well, anything. Insider knowledge. We already know the best spots, how to get there, and what's cool about them. This means you don't have to spend your time abroad on your phone looking up Yelp reviews and reading Wikipedia. A crew. Solo travel is great but it's a blast to travel with a group of fun people. At the same time, we know how hard it is to plan international travel with friends. Between varying work schedules, budgets, and personalities, it can be super frustrating to try to organize trips with multiple people. Going on an FTLO trip means you'll be traveling with up to 14 people around your age, all open to meeting new friends, trying new things, and having a good time. No pressure. FTLO allows you to travel with a group of people without the pressure of feeling like you have to do everything together. You can spend the whole day wandering around by yourself and still have people to get dinner with at the end of the day. Even if you sign up with friends, it's easier for you to break away on your own for a bit in a group setting like this. 3. Who goes on FTLO trips? Our trips are designed for individuals aged 25-39 who are looking to travel more and meet like-minded people along the way. We get a lot of questions about who goes on our trips so here is breakdown of what to expect: Average age: 30 (most fall between 27 and 34) 80% go alone 70-80% women, 20-30% men (Note: the ratio really doesn't affect overall trip enjoyment!) 60% say they are single and looking to mingle 75% live in big cities 100% want to travel and meet new people The most important thing to know is that everyone on our trips chooses to be there, so you already know they are most likely outgoing, open to new experiences, looking to meet new people, and ready to have a good time. FTLO Community 4. What's up with Gal spots and Guy spots? We do this for rooming planning purposes and to strive for a balanced mix on our trips, which is why we hold a certain number of spots for those who tends to book later (ahem, guys). That said, we have little control over the final ratio and do open up guy spots to gals (and vice versa) the closer we get to the departure date. If spots are sold out, we definitely recommend signing up for the waitlist! Note: We welcome all genders on our trips. For anyone who doesn't fall into the guy/gal categories, please know this distinction is mainly to help us plan accommodations so just select the option you would feel more comfortable rooming with. Note: At the end of the day, the gender makeup really doesn't affect trip enjoyment. There are always locals to flirt with if that's what you're looking for :) Gal and Guy spots 5. Is an FTLO Trip right for me? Our trips are right for you if: You're social, independent, curious, and fun-loving You're interested in getting out of your comfort zone and trying new things You can go with the flow, even when the unexpected occurs You’re inclusive and enjoy meeting new people Our trips are not right for you if: You're difficult, rude, or mean You complain a lot You’re disrespectful or dismissive of other cultures You have severe social anxiety You're not open to new experiences is FTLO right for you 6. Are these luxury trips? No, our trips are not luxury, but they're not budget either. We're right in the middle, with enough experience to know when it makes sense to save and when it's worth it to splurge. (i.e. we might stay in a more basic hotel for a couple of nights so we can include a Michelin worthy meal and a private catamaran ride). Is this a luxury trip GET STARTED Group size? 7. How big are groups? FTLO trips run with between 5 and 15 people and have an average group size of 10. We cap the number of people on each trip to cultivate a sense of community without making you feel like you're part of a herd. Plus, smaller numbers allow us to assimilate more easily into the local community. 8. Are FTLO trips suitable for LGBTQIA+ travelers? At FTLO, we believe that acceptance and inclusivity are paramount when it comes to travel. We appreciate that our diverse community of travelers includes individuals from the LGBTQIA+ community, and we want travelers of all sexual orientations and gender identities to feel comfortable and respected throughout their journey. With that said, we encourage you to stay informed about LGBTQIA+ rights in the destinations you plan to visit, as they may differ from one country to the next. The unfortunate reality is that not every region of the world is as welcoming as we would like. We recommend visiting Equaldex for information regarding LGBTQIA+-related laws around the globe. On trips, FTLO has a zero-tolerance policy towards discrimination, verbal or physical abuse, and sexual harassment. If you encounter any inappropriate behavior during your trip (from fellow travelers, leaders, or partners), please immediately inform your trip leader or FTLO HQ through the pre-departure hub our operations email - support@ftlotravel.com . For roommate pairings, we pair you based on the spot type you select in your booking form (gal or guy). We also have single room supplements available for each trip (except the South Africa trip) if you would prefer a single room. This can be added to your order during the checkout process. If you have specific questions about rooming before you book a trip, please reach out to one of our community managers at hello@ftlotravel.com . We believe that by fostering an environment of respect and understanding, we can enhance the joy and connection that comes from exploring the world together. Welcome to Italy! arrive Day 2 - Lecce/Otranto OH Otranto Roll out early toward the white-washed walls of Otranto, a UNESCO World Heritage site hugging Puglia’s coast. Spend your morning strolling the Lungomare degli Eroi promenade, checking out cafes perched above the sea, or popping into the 11th-century cathedral’s Ossuary Chapel to marvel at the darkly beautiful altar of skulls and bones. Meet up for a seafood lunch before we head to the beach to soak up that Italian sun. Head to a beach club in the afternoon to float through that magical Mediterranean. That evening, we’ll find our favorite local chef, head to the market for supplies, and learn how to whip up some classic Pugliese specialties. After a family-style meal you’ll never forget, stroll the historic center and grab a well-earned gelato. Day by day EXPLORE Day 3 - Alb erobello & Matera HELLO ALBEROBELLO Today's adventure takes us to Alberobello, the land of cone-shaped trullo buildings that have hung around this area from as far back as the 14th century. Give your Italian a go with the local artisans, and grab a mid-morning espresso (or two, we’re not counting) as you check out the sights. Around noon, we’ll head out about an hour to Matera, stopping for lunch in the countryside—a patchwork of vineyards, olive groves, and wheat fields—along the way. After we get there, drop your bags, head out, and crisscross the snaking streets of one of the world’s oldest inhabited cities. With 9,000-year-old cave dwellings and a maze-like network of underground passages and chambers, you'll feel like you're staying in a real-life labyrinth. Head for dinner with friends, have a splash of vino (or two, common theme here), and take it all in. You might even start to recognize the views from a certain James Bond flick. CONNECT Day 4 - Ma tera MATERA ROCKS Your morning’s free, so sleep in and shake off that late-night or gather the crew and hop back into Matera’s rocky expanse. This ancient city is a twisting, turning tangle of corridors—try to check out the Casa Noha, the Church of Saint Mary of Idris, and the historic architecture along Via Di Ridola. When it's time for a bite, pull up a chair at one of Matera's outdoor eateries, have entirely too much pizza or pasta. That afternoon, we’re heading out and making our way down toward that world-famous Italian coast. Say hello to seaside paradise in Sorrento. The evening is free to explore so grab dinner with friends, stroll the Marina Grande, and don't miss the chance to sip limoncello, a local favorite. MARVEL Day 5 - Sorrento AMO sorrento There’s nothing quite like waking up to a Sorrento sunrise. After a bite at the hotel, it’s time to drive on over to Positano. Spend your day lounging with friends as you soak up one of the most picturesque towns along the entire Amalfi Coast. Hit Positano beach, or head toward the iconic Arienzo Beach Club for a splash of rosé and sea views. That evening, we’ll have a scenic dinner together in Positano, and then you can head to a subterranean seaside cave club for a one-of-a-kind good time to dance it up before heading home. INDULGE Day 6 - Capri Cruise to caPrI After catching up on our Positano night out over breakfast, we’re off on a private boat trip towards Capri. With a mix of rocky coves, towering mountains, historic ruins, and a whole slew of lavish bars and restaurants, this island’s fame is well-deserved. For lunch, we’ll all get together for a one-of-a-kind Italian meal cooked up right in front of us at our favorite spot in all of Capri. With your five course tasting menu, you'll try fresh vegetables from an organic onsite garden and plenty of local wine. After that, it's back to the boats as we cruise through more stunning views in the Bay of Naples back to Sorrento and the mainland. CRUISE Day 7 - Rome SEA and S UN Get breakfast with the crew, and then your morning’s free. Hit Sorrento’s waterfront boardwalk for some final Mediterranean fun or grab souvenirs for friends and family back home; not everyone gets to spend a week traveling from Puglia to the Amalfi Coast. Later on, we’ll meet up and head for Rome to make it nice and easy to catch your flight out tomorrow. After we get to the capital, you’ll get to share some final laughs with the crew as you drink up more of that delicious Italian wine and chow down on a final farewell feast. BOOK! Day 8 - Rome A ROMAN GOODBYE Grab one last bite at the hotel in Rome with your friends before you say your goodbyes and head on out. If you’re flying home, your trip leader can help you figure out the easiest way to get to the airport. If you’ve got a few days to keep traveling (lucky you), we’ve got plenty of recommendations in store. Grab a rental car, and keep on exploring what Italy has to offer. Maybe even head north to Tuscany or take a train west toward Barcelona and the south of France . There’s nothing quite like traveling through Europe; if you’ve got the time, make the most of it—the Amalfi Coast and Puglia are epic, but there’s always more to see. "You may have the world, if I may have Italy." -Giuseppe Verdi FAST FACTS Fast Facts Just for fun Lemons grow abundantly along the Amalfi coast, and the citrusy scent is one of the distinguishing features of the area. The Rolling Stones wrote the song "Midnight Rambler" in Positano's cafés during a holiday. Puglia produces 60% of Italy’s olive oil and has over 50 million olive trees. Trip notes While we can’t guarantee private rooms, you should book your trip earlier if you prefer one, as they usually fill up. Certain locations on this trip are not handicap friendly - if you have mobility issues, please contact us before booking. On European trips, we stay as close to historic city centers as possible. This means your accommodations will often be on the small side, quirky, and unique (we love this!). All activities are weather dependent; in the unlikely event that we are unable to run an activity, we will have a suitable alternative in place.
