Your questions answered Heading 1 ABOUT FTLO BOOKING LAST MINUTE BOOKINGS TRIP PREP ON A TRIP HEALTH ON TRIPS About FAQs ABOUT FTLO FAQs What is FTLO all about? Why join an FTLO trip? Who goes on FTLO trips? What's up with Gal spots and Guy spots? Is an FTLO Trip right for me? Are these luxury trips? How big are groups? Are FTLO trips suitable for LGBTQIA+ travelers? Ok, I'm in. Now what? What is FTLO? 1. what is ftlo all about? The name pretty much sums it up. We started For The Love of Travel, for the love of travel - for the incredible, life-changing experiences, the magical moments, the forever memories, and the endless smiles that traveling creates. And we wanted to make it easier for busy young people to do more of it in an authentic, sustainable way. Travel isn't something you can only do on a gap year or when you're retired. We see it as an integral part of life- a necessary and continuing education that deserves as much devotion as academia. We curate fun, well-rounded itineraries and take care of the major details to give you more time to explore, experience, learn and connect with the people around you and places you're in. That way, you can have an authentic cultural experience and a vacation. Why join FTLO? 2. Why join an FTLO trip? Fun. You'll be spending a week or moreexploring a foreign country while getting to know a bunch of cool people your age. It's a blast. Hassle-free. We've already taken care of the logistics so you don't have to spend hours planning or waste your vacation time dealing with unforeseen issues, spending money you didn't budget for, or stressing about, well, anything. Insider knowledge. We already know the best spots, how to get there, and what's cool about them. This means you don't have to spend your time abroad on your phone looking up Yelp reviews and reading Wikipedia. A crew. Solo travel is great but it's a blast to travel with a group of fun people. At the same time, we know how hard it is to plan international travel with friends. Between varying work schedules, budgets, and personalities, it can be super frustrating to try to organize trips with multiple people. Going on an FTLO trip means you'll be traveling with up to 14 people around your age, all open to meeting new friends, trying new things, and having a good time. No pressure. FTLO allows you to travel with a group of people without the pressure of feeling like you have to do everything together. You can spend the whole day wandering around by yourself and still have people to get dinner with at the end of the day. Even if you sign up with friends, it's easier for you to break away on your own for a bit in a group setting like this. 3. Who goes on FTLO trips? Our trips are designed for individuals aged 25-39 who are looking to travel more and meet like-minded people along the way. We get a lot of questions about who goes on our trips so here is breakdown of what to expect: Average age: 30 (most fall between 27 and 34) 80% go alone 70-80% women, 20-30% men (Note: the ratio really doesn't affect overall trip enjoyment!) 60% say they are single and looking to mingle 75% live in big cities 100% want to travel and meet new people The most important thing to know is that everyone on our trips chooses to be there, so you already know they are most likely outgoing, open to new experiences, looking to meet new people, and ready to have a good time. FTLO Community 4. What's up with Gal spots and Guy spots? We do this for rooming planning purposes and to strive for a balanced mix on our trips, which is why we hold a certain number of spots for those who tends to book later (ahem, guys). That said, we have little control over the final ratio and do open up guy spots to gals (and vice versa) the closer we get to the departure date. If spots are sold out, we definitely recommend signing up for the waitlist! Note: We welcome all genders on our trips. For anyone who doesn't fall into the guy/gal categories, please know this distinction is mainly to help us plan accommodations so just select the option you would feel more comfortable rooming with. Note: At the end of the day, the gender makeup really doesn't affect trip enjoyment. There are always locals to flirt with if that's what you're looking for :) Gal and Guy spots 5. Is an FTLO Trip right for me? Our trips are right for you if: You're social, independent, curious, and fun-loving You're interested in getting out of your comfort zone and trying new things You can go with the flow, even when the unexpected occurs You’re inclusive and enjoy meeting new people Our trips are not right for you if: You're difficult, rude, or mean You complain a lot You’re disrespectful or dismissive of other cultures You have severe social anxiety You're not open to new experiences is FTLO right for you 6. Are these luxury trips? No, our trips are not luxury, but they're not budget either. We're right in the middle, with enough experience to know when it makes sense to save and when it's worth it to splurge. (i.e. we might stay in a more basic hotel for a couple of nights so we can include a Michelin worthy meal and a private catamaran ride). Is this a luxury trip GET STARTED Group size? 7. How big are groups? FTLO trips run with between 5 and 15 people and have an average group size of 10. We cap the number of people on each trip to cultivate a sense of community without making you feel like you're part of a herd. Plus, smaller numbers allow us to assimilate more easily into the local community. 8. Are FTLO trips suitable for LGBTQIA+ travelers? At FTLO, we believe that acceptance and inclusivity are paramount when it comes to travel. We appreciate that our diverse community of travelers includes individuals from the LGBTQIA+ community, and we want travelers of all sexual orientations and gender identities to feel comfortable and respected throughout their journey. With that said, we encourage you to stay informed about LGBTQIA+ rights in the destinations you plan to visit, as they may differ from one country to the next. The unfortunate reality is that not every region of the world is as welcoming as we would like. We recommend visiting Equaldex for information regarding LGBTQIA+-related laws around the globe. On trips, FTLO has a zero-tolerance policy towards discrimination, verbal or physical abuse, and sexual harassment. If you encounter any inappropriate behavior during your trip (from fellow travelers, leaders, or partners), please immediately inform your trip leader or FTLO HQ through the pre-departure hub our operations email - support@ftlotravel.com . For roommate pairings, we pair you based on the spot type you select in your booking form (gal or guy). We also have single room supplements available for each trip (except the South Africa trip) if you would prefer a single room. This can be added to your order during the checkout process. If you have specific questions about rooming before you book a trip, please reach out to one of our community managers at hello@ftlotravel.com . We believe that by fostering an environment of respect and understanding, we can enhance the joy and connection that comes from exploring the world together. Inclusivity 9. Ok, I'm in. Now what? Great! Once you've decided which trip you want to join, click the "book" button on the trip page. This is an out-of-this-world destination where adventure’s found around every corner. In Reykjavik—the capital city—it all starts with the food. After dropping your bags and getting to know the crew, you'll head out on our street eats tour to try eight distinctively Icelandic dishes. You’ll be surprised at what’s on the summer menu; even Iceland has its variation of warm weather classics like local hot dogs and homemade ice cream from secret family recipes. Grab some drinks with your new friends and stay out a bit too late. In summertime, this place is alive and energetic, and because of the latitude, the sun might not set until midnight or later. Taste Day 2 - Golden Circle/Reykholt Golden View After a bit of rest (hopefully); today, we're leaving the capital to check out the world-famous Golden Circle. From Thingvellir to Gullfoss and Geysir, it’s hard not to feel tiny compared to these endless landscapes. Kick off the day walking through Viking hillsides where rocky canyons, split by drifting tectonic plates, cut through the country. From there, we'll grab lunch together at a family-owned greenhouse and learn how the locals live off the land. We’ll continue along the route to marvel at steaming geysers shooting a hundred feet up, tiered waterfalls crashing down, and raw landscapes torn open by thousands of years of earthquakes that'll leave you speechless. End the day at a group dinner, where almost every item on the entire menu is made from scratch. gallop Day 3 - Selfoss Majestic Manes Get an early bite in before we roll on toward the lava fields and open country of Selfoss. After learning about Iceland's stocky brand of horse, hop in the saddle and ride out across mossy hillsides before we set out on foot to chase waterfalls. With unreal vast viewpoints all along the way, you'll probably feel like you've been dropped into a scene straight out of Game of Thrones; after all, the show used Iceland for many of its locations! We'll stop for lunch at one of the oldest food halls in town, and then the rest of the day is yours to explore freely. Wander around Selfoss or unwind in the town's geothermal pool. trek Day 4 - Reykjavik Lava & Lagoons Today, we're heading underground for a whole new view of Iceland as we explore the inner workings of a lava tube. After leaving Selfoss, we'll hike through an almost mile-long tunnel of basaltic rock, an otherworldly geological wonder sculpted by the lava flow of a 5,000-year-old eruption. We'll need some Icelandic sun after our subterranean journey, so up next, head to Reykjavik's sizzling Sky Lagoon for the most relaxing swim on the island. Rejuvenating springs, spas, and thermal pools are social hubs in Iceland that reflect the harmony between the people and the geothermal resources; this one, with its rocky grottos and deep-blue infinity pool, heats up to over 100 degrees! The afternoon's free for you to check out some of the capital's cool street art before we all meet up for an Icelandic farewell dinner. Explore Day 5 - Reykjavik End of an Adventure Summer in Iceland is a treat of epic nature lit up by endless sun. The country is alive with wildlife, wildflowers, and the most mild weather you’ll see all year. After saying your goodbyes, head to the airport and start planning your next adventure. On the other hand, if you've got more time to explore, consider heading out to Iceland's less visited east, try whale watching off the south coast, or hop a flight to mainland Europe for some Croatian beach fun (Pro tip: check out Iceland's stopover program for amazing flight deals). Thanks for coming along to soak up the North Atlantic sun. That's a wrap! Here, where the wind writes poems on the waves, and the rocks whisper ancient sagas, lies Iceland, a land spun from fire and ice, forever etched in the memory of the world. - Bárður Snæbjörnsson Fast facts FAST FACTS Just for fun Iceland is home to the world’s oldest parliament, Alþingi. It was founded in 930! Icelanders traditionally do not have surnames, instead they derive their last names from their father's or mother's first names. Icelandic horses have a unique thick double coat that helps them withstand harsh Icelandic weather conditions. Trip notes While we can't guarantee private rooms when visiting Iceland, you should book your trip earlier if you prefer one, as they usually fill up. Iceland is a small country, but the weather can change fast year round, so be prepared with your wardrobe. On European trips, we stay as close to historic city centers as possible. This means your accommodations will often be on the small side, quirky, and unique (we love this!). Bring a sleep mask when you visit Iceland in the summer months; the sun sets incredibly late (and sometimes not even at all). Ensure your passport is valid for 3 months after your return date. All activities are weather-dependent; in the unlikely event that we are unable to run an activity, we will have a suitable alternative in place. More information regarding visa requirements and Covid restrictions can be found here . SEE DATES & BOOK LEARN MORE about iceland Iceland in summer (particularly around the summer solstice) experiences nearly 24-hour daylight due to the midnight sun phenomenon. With average temperatures ranging from 50°F to 59°F (10°-15°C), the season offers extended daylight hours for exploration. The landscape, characterized by lava fields, glaciers, geysers, and waterfalls, provides ample opportunities for outdoor activities like hiking, glacier tours, and sightseeing. Good to Know Iceland’s official currency is the Icelandic Krona. The country ranks number 1 on the Global Peace Index. The country’s national language is Icelandic. Flights Fly into Keflavik International Airport (KEF) You'll need to be in Reykjavik by 1:30pm on Day 1; however, we recommend planning to arrive a day early just to be safe. If you take a flight that arrives in the morning, check out the Blue Lagoon on your way to Reykjavik (reservations required). We recommend hitting up Quay Street for dinner, drinks, and some Irish tunes. * explore Day 6 - Galway cliffs & country Have a bite with the group at the hotel before heading south for a day exploring Ireland’s staggering coastline. We’ll meet up with our guide and hit the Burren, the otherworldly rock formation that stretches for 100s of square kilometers across rolling terrain. Grab lunch and a little Irish coffee pick-me-up before heading over toward the Cliffs of Moher. Formed some 300 million years ago, the towering ledges hang 500 feet over the windswept Atlantic. This is, without a doubt, one of the country’s most incredible sites. After checking it out, head back to Galway, where the night is yours to grab dinner with friends, explore the lovely streets, and decide for yourself whether the Scots or the Irish have the more difficult accent to get a hold of. adventure Day 7 - Dublin Fair City Catch up with the crew over breakfast, and then we’ll start winding our way to the capital. Then, the evening is yours to soak up the sights, sounds, and suds of the Irish capital. wander Day 9 - Dublin Mar Sin Leat Smile because it happened, don’t cry because it’s over. Unfortunately, the end is here, so eat up with your friends before saying goodbye and heading home or onward to your next adventure. If you’ve got a later flight, hit the streets for one last bit of sightseeing if you can. If you're in the mood for more European fun, consider popping over to the Basque Country for some of the best food in the world or down to Sardinia for one beachy good time. behold "This is a city of shifting light, of changing skies, of sudden vistas. A city so beautiful it breaks the heart again and again.” - Alexander McCall Smith on Edinburgh FAST FACTS Fast facts Just for Fun Hurling is considered the fastest field sport in the world and the sliothar (ball) can travel 120km/hour! 10 million pints of Guinness are produced in Dublin every day! Scotland has the highest proportion of red heads in the world. Trip notes While we can’t guarantee private rooms, you sho uld book your trip earlier if you prefer one, as they usually fill up. The weather in Ireland and Scotland can be unpredictable, so make sure you pack some warm clothes and a rain jacket. Pub culture is a big part of life in Ireland and Scotland, but you’ll never feel pressured to drink if you don’t want to. There are always non-alcoholic choices. Ireland uses the Euro while Scotland is on the Pound sterling. On European trips, we stay as close to historic city centers as possible. This means your accommodations will often be on the small side, quirky, and unique (we love this!). All activities are weather dependent; in the unlikely event that we are unable to run an activity, we will have a suitable alternative in place. More information regarding visa requirements and Covid restrictions can be found here . SEE DATES & BOOK LEARN MORE About Ireland & Scotland Ireland & Scotland are known for their breathtaking natural beauty, fun and welcoming environments and fascinating histories. Both countries are home to some of the most photogenic places on earth. The Irish diaspora is an incredible thing. More than 80 million people worldwide claim some Irish heritage, while the country itself only has a population of 6 million. Scotland’s population comes in just a hair lower at 5.5 million, a figure overshadowed by the local sheep population by more than a million. Good to know Ireland’s official languages are Irish and English while Scotland’s is English. Accents in both countries can take quite a bit of getting used to. Ireland uses the Euro while Scotland is on the Pound sterling. Irish surnames that start in “Mac” mean “son of” while those that start in “O” mean “grandson of.” Weather (especially on the Atlantic coast) can be predictably unpredictable, so make sure to pack a waterproof jacket and some warm clothes. Though it rains a lot, it's also windy, so not many people carry around umbrellas. You are welcome to bring one, but a good jacket and covers for your backpack or luggage might be more practical. flights Flights Fly into Edinburgh (EDI) You'll need to be in Edinburgh Airport by 12pm and be at the hotel at 2:30pm on Day 1; however, we do recommend flying in earlier to have some time to explore the city on your own! Our excursions are built by travelers for travelers, and we rely on our guests for valuable post-trip feedback to help us create memorable experiences that we’re proud to share with our friends. That means if you head out on one of our inaugural trips, we want you to give us your honest insights so we can continue improving. Inaugural Discount 11. How do referrals work?
