Arrive
Fly into Heraklion Airport (HER)
We recommend buying a round-trip flight to Athens and then booking a separate regional flight to Crete if you want to save money. You'll need to be in Agios Nikolaos by 2:30 PM on Day 1. From Heraklion Airport to Agios Nikolaos takes about 50 minutes by taxi.
Depart
Fly out of Chania (CHQ)
We recommend flying out of Chania or extending your trip and enjoying a few more days in Greece. If you've booked a roundtrip flight from Athens make sure you have enough connection time to make your transfer.
Passport Requirements
Bring a passport with at least two blank pages, valid for three months after leaving the Schengen Zone. We recommend six months’ validity to be safe.
Accommodations
You’ll stay in locally owned boutique hotels that reflect Crete’s charm and hospitality. Rooms may be smaller with fewer amenities than large resorts, but they deliver on comfort, service, character, and stunning views.
Packing List
Think beachy and breathable — pack light fabrics, comfy sandals, and a hat for sun protection. A light layer helps for breezy nights, and don’t forget swimwear for boat days and spontaneous ocean dips.
Dietary Restrictions
Greek cuisine is fresh, flexible, and often vegetarian- and vegan-friendly. Gluten-free options may be more limited, so let us know your needs early and we’ll help you navigate menus.
Itinerary Changes
Plans may shift due to weather conditions or group feedback. If an activity can’t run, we’ll offer a suitable alternative. Ferry delays can happen, so be prepared for possible changes to your travel schedule.
Weather
From June to September, temps often reach 85°F+ (30°C). It’s hot and dry, so stay hydrated, wear sunscreen, and pace yourself when exploring.
Private Room Upgrades
Private room upgrades are available for an additional amount and can be added during booking. These are available on a first come basis so plan to book in advance if you are interested in your own room.
Let's Get Social

What’s the vibe of this trip?
+
-
This trip blends warm, relaxed island culture with meaningful group connection. Expect long lunches with a view, sunny beach time, and easygoing cultural excursions. It's perfect for travelers who love food, Mediterranean landscapes, and a social but not overly busy pace. The energy is welcoming, curious, and rooted in local flavor.
What’s the pace of the itinerary?
+
-
It’s a mellow, well-paced itinerary with some walking tours and a few travel days as we explore multiple parts of the island. You’ll have guided excursions and shared meals, but also time to wander, swim, and relax. Expect a balance of cultural depth and chill summer vibes.
What are the accommodations like?
+
-
We stay in locally owned boutique hotels that reflect Crete’s island charm and Greek hospitality. They’re comfortable and welcoming, though typically smaller and simpler than U.S. hotels.
In Agios Nikolaos and Chania, you’ll be near beaches and bustling town centers.
In Rethymno, the hotel is perched on a hilltop — a little farther from the beach, but known for its peaceful atmosphere and scenic views.
I have dietary restrictions. Will there be options for me?
+
-
Yes, we can usually accommodate most dietary needs.
Greek cuisine is naturally flexible and full of fresh options, especially for vegetarians and vegans. In Crete, you’ll find classics like Greek salad, hummus, and stuffed grape leaves – but traditional dishes may include lamb or pork, so it’s helpful to ask about ingredients.
Gluten-free travelers will find fewer labeled options, but many dishes work naturally.
Let us know your preferences in advance and your trip leader will help you navigate menus and restaurants. Bringing a few of your favorite snacks is a smart move.
When should I arrive and depart, and how do I get to the hotel?
+
-
Plan to arrive at Liberia International Airport (LIR) by 2 PM on Day 1. We have arranged a group shuttle from the airport to the hotel, scheduled to depart at 3 PM. Should you arrive earlier or later than the shuttle's scheduled departure time, you may need to consider alternative transportation options
The trip ends in Tamarindo on Day 5. A morning group shuttle to Liberia International Airport (LIR) is included and scheduled to arrive by 1 PM. If you’re planning to stay in Costa Rica a bit longer, you’re welcome to make your own arrangements for transportation to the airport.
When’s the best time to go to Crete?
+
-
Crete in the summer is warm, sunny, and perfect for outdoor exploration. Expect dry days with temperatures in the 80s–90s°F (27–35°C) and plenty of sun. It’s a great time to enjoy beach days, long al fresco meals, and evening strolls through historic towns.
What should I pack?
+
-
Crete is hot, sunny, and laid-back. Pack light, breathable clothes, swimwear, and sun protection like a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Bring comfortable shoes for exploring historic sites and wandering through charming towns, and insect repellent is helpful for evenings or visits to rural areas.
How much should I budget for meals and extras?
+
-
Greek food is delicious, local, and generally affordable — think mezze spreads, grilled seafood, and carafes of wine with a view. Sharing meals is part of the fun and makes dining even more budget-friendly.
We recommending planning to spend around $250 USD, depending on your personal consumption habits.
