Day 1 – Agios Nikolaos
Yassas!
After touching down on Greece’s largest island, head to your hotel in the sun-kissed seaside town of Agios Nikolaos.
Fringed by arid mountains, this colorful eastern Crete capital is home to plenty of mythical tales (we’re not far from Zeus’s hometown, after all); if you get in early, head out and start diving into tales of a legendary past.
In the evening, we’ll all meet up in the hotel lobby and venture out for drinks and our first taste of Cretan food - said to be the best in Greece! Get to know your travelmates over local wine and fresh local recipes.

Trip Notes

Arrive
Fly into Heraklion Airport (HER)
We recommend buying a round-trip flight to Athens and then booking a separate regional flight to Crete if you want to save money. You'll need to be in Agios Nikolaos by 2:30 PM on Day 1. From Heraklion Airport to Agios Nikolaos takes about 50 minutes by taxi.
Depart
Fly out of Chania (CHQ)
We recommend flying out of Chania or extending your trip and enjoying a few more days in Greece. If you've booked a roundtrip flight from Athens make sure you have enough connection time to make your transfer.
Dietary Restrictions
Greek cuisine is fresh, flexible, and often vegetarian- and vegan-friendly. Gluten-free options may be more limited, so let us know your needs early and we’ll help you navigate menus.
Accommodations
You’ll stay in locally owned boutique hotels that reflect Crete’s charm and hospitality. Rooms may be smaller with fewer amenities than large resorts, but they deliver on comfort, service, character, and stunning views.
Itinerary Changes
Plans may shift due to weather conditions or group feedback. If an activity can’t run, we’ll offer a suitable alternative. Ferry delays can happen, so be prepared for possible changes to your travel schedule.
Packing List
Think beachy and breathable — pack light fabrics, comfy sandals, and a hat for sun protection. A light layer helps for breezy nights, and don’t forget swimwear for boat days and spontaneous ocean dips.
Weather
Early summer (May–June) brings warm, sunny days and cooler nights, with highs in the mid-70s to low-80s °F. Mid-summer (July–Aug) is hottest, reaching the upper-80s to low-90s °F. September stays warm, and the sea is at its peak temperature.
Passport Requirements
Bring a passport with at least two blank pages, valid for three months after leaving the Schengen Zone. We recommend six months’ validity to be safe.
Private Room Upgrades
Private room upgrades are available for an additional amount and can be added during booking. These are available on a first-come basis, so plan to book in advance if you are interested in your own room.

How much should I budget for meals and extras?
+
-
Greek food is delicious, local, and generally affordable — think mezze spreads, grilled seafood, and carafes of wine with a view. Sharing meals is part of the fun and makes dining even more budget-friendly.
We recommending planning to spend around $250 USD, depending on your personal consumption habits.
I have dietary restrictions. Will there be options for me?
+
-
Yes, we can usually accommodate most dietary needs.
Greek cuisine is naturally flexible and full of fresh options, especially for vegetarians and vegans. In Crete, you’ll find classics like Greek salad, hummus, and stuffed grape leaves – but traditional dishes may include lamb or pork, so it’s helpful to ask about ingredients.
Gluten-free travelers will find fewer labeled options, but many dishes work naturally.
Let us know your preferences in advance and your trip leader will help you navigate menus and restaurants. Bringing a few of your favorite snacks is a smart move.
What are the accommodations like?
+
-
We stay in locally owned boutique hotels that reflect Crete’s island charm and Greek hospitality. They’re comfortable and welcoming, though typically smaller and simpler than U.S. hotels.
In Agios Nikolaos and Chania, you’ll be near beaches and bustling town centers.
In Rethymno, the hotel is perched on a hilltop — a little farther from the beach, but known for its peaceful atmosphere and scenic views.
What should I pack?
+
-
Crete is hot, sunny, and laid-back. Pack light, breathable clothes, swimwear, and sun protection like a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Bring comfortable shoes for exploring historic sites and wandering through charming towns, and insect repellent is helpful for evenings or visits to rural areas.
Any recommendations if I'd like to extend my time abroad?
+
-
If you’ve got some more time for an endless Mediterranean summer, you could jet off to Croatia, keep on cruisin’ through Greece, or check out more of the bigger-city life in Barcelona & South of France or Portugal.
When’s the best time to go to Crete?
+
-
Crete in the summer is warm, sunny, and perfect for outdoor exploration. Expect dry days with temperatures in the 80s–90s°F (27–35°C) and plenty of sun. It’s a great time to enjoy beach days, long al fresco meals, and evening strolls through historic towns.
When should I arrive and depart, and how do I get to the hotel?
+
-
Plan to arrive at Heraklion Airport (HER) by 2:30 PM local time on Day 1. From the airport, it’s about a 50-minute taxi ride to Agios Nikolaos, where the trip begins. To save money, we recommend booking a round-trip flight to Athens and then purchasing a separate regional flight to Crete.
The trip ends in Chania (CHQ). We recommend flying out of Chania or extending your stay in Greece to explore further. If you booked a round-trip flight through Athens, be sure to allow enough connection time to make your transfer.
What’s the pace of the itinerary?
+
-
It’s a mellow, well-paced itinerary with some walking tours and a few travel days as we explore multiple parts of the island. You’ll have guided excursions and shared meals, but also time to wander, swim, and relax. Expect a balance of cultural depth and chill summer vibes.
What’s the vibe of this trip?
+
-
This trip blends warm, relaxed island culture with meaningful group connection. Expect long lunches with a view, sunny beach time, and easygoing cultural excursions. It's perfect for travelers who love food, Mediterranean landscapes, and a social but not overly busy pace. The energy is welcoming, curious, and rooted in local flavor.
What's the weather like in Crete?
+
-
Crete enjoys a classic Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers, warm seas, and long sunny days.
Late spring (May–June): Warm and sunny, with highs around the mid 70s °F (~24 °C). Evenings are mild, though sea temperatures remain cool until late June.
Mid-summer (July–August): Hot and dry, with highs near the mid 80s °F (~29 °C). Expect strong sun, warm nights, and ideal swimming conditions.
Early autumn (September): Still hot, with highs in the low 80s °F (~27 °C). The sea stays comfortably warm, and evenings are breezy and pleasant.
