Trip Notes

Read through helpful flight details, trip notes and details about our Amalfi Coast & Puglia Trip.

Arrive

Fly into Brindisi (BDS airport)

Please arrive at Brindisi (BDS airport) by 2:45 PM local time on Day 1. There's a bus and a private hotel shuttle that can take you directly from Brindisi Airport to Lecce, which takes around 45 minutes and costs under 10 euros.

Some people like flying in a day earlier to account for potential travel delays and explore independently.

Depart

Fly out of Rome (FCO)

We recommend flying out of Rome or extending your trip and enjoying a few more days in Italy.

Although flying into Brindisi and out of Rome are the easiest options, that might not be the cheapest option. We don't want flight prices to hold you back from the joining trip so here are a few other options:

Book a round trip in/out of Rome and take the train to Lecce or take a local flight to Brindisi (and then a cab to Lecce).

Passport Requirements

Your passport should be valid for at least three months after you leave the Schengen zone. Six months’ validity is recommended to be safe.

Visas

Visas are not required for U.S. travelers for stays of 90 days or less (within a 180-day period).

Free Time Recs

If you'd like to visit the Vatican museums, you'll need to book early from the Vatican website. It's best to visit after 4 PM on Day 7 or after our trip ends if you plan to spend more time in Rome.

Accessibility

Certain locations on this trip are not handicap friendly - if you have mobility issues, please contact us before booking.

Accommodations

During this trip, we stay as close to historic city centers as possible. This means your accommodations will often be on the small, quirky, and unique side (and we love that!).

Tipping Culture

Tipping 10–15% is appreciated at restaurants and for service in Italy.

Itinerary Changes

This itinerary is subject to change based on the weather conditions. In the unlikely event that we are unable to run a specific activity, we will have a suitable alternative in place.

Dietary Restrictions

Italy offers lots of fresh produce, pasta varieties, and vegetarian-friendly and gluten-free options. Let us know any restrictions in advance so we can help you navigate meals smoothly.

Private Room Upgrades

Private room upgrades are available for an additional amount and can be added during booking. These are available on a first come basis so plan to book in advance if you are interested in your own room.

Let's Get Social

#ftloamalficoastandpulgia in the wild

What’s the vibe of this trip?

+

-

This trip blends dreamy coastlines, laid-back beach time, delicious cuisine, and rich cultural discovery.

Expect sunny days, picture-perfect towns like Positano and Matera, and plenty of time to unwind over spritzes, seafood pasta, and gelato with new friends.

What’s the pace of the itinerary?

+

-

It’s a well-balanced itinerary with a mix of activity and leisure.

You’ll explore ancient cities like Matera, stroll seaside promenades, take a private boat to Capri, and enjoy group dinners in postcard-worthy settings.

Free time is built in, so you’ll have space to relax or venture out on your own.

What are the accommodations like?

+

-

You'll stay in hand-picked hotels that reflect the charm of each destination. Rooms may be smaller than U.S. standards, but they’re clean, well-located, and full of character.

  • In Lecce and Sorrento, enjoy centrally located hotels near the action.

  • In Matera, expect a more atmospheric stay — with some rooms built into the historic stone landscape.

  • The final night in Rome offers a comfortable base for your departure.

I have dietary restrictions. Will there be options for me?

+

-

Yes! Italy is generally accommodating of dietary restrictions, with plenty of fresh produce, pasta varieties, and vegetarian-friendly and gluten-free options. In coastal areas, seafood is common, and some local specialties may include cheese or cured meats — but there are usually workarounds.

If you have strict dietary needs, we always recommend bringing a few snacks just in case and letting us know in advance so we can help you navigate meals along the way.

What’s the weather like in Southern Italy?

+

-

Southern Italy boasts over 300 days of sunshine a year. Expect hot, dry summers with temps ranging from the high 70s to low 90s °F (25–34°C). Bring plenty of sun protection, and plan for cooler evenings in hill towns like Matera.

What should I pack for Southern Italy?

+

-

Pack light, breathable clothing for sunny Mediterranean days, plus a few dressier options for dinners and evenings out. Comfortable walking shoes are a must for exploring hilly towns like Matera and cobblestone streets in Lecce and Sorrento. Don’t forget a swimsuit, sunscreen, sunglasses, a sunhat, and insect repellent just in case.

How much should I budget for meals and extras?

+

-

Italy’s food scene is both delicious and diverse — from rustic, budget-friendly trattorias to upscale seafood restaurants along the coast, offering meals that can range from €10–15 for a simple pasta dish to €50 or more for a gourmet dining experience.

We typically recommend that you budget around $200 USD for meals not included in the itinerary, depending on your personal consumption and spending habits.

When should I arrive and depart, and how do I get to the hotel?

+

-

Our trip kicks off in Lecce where the closest airport is Brindisi Airport (BDS). A convenient direct bus connects Brindisi Airport to Lecce in about 45 minutes for approximately €10. If you're flying into Brindisi, please ensure you arrive at BDS by 2:45 PM to allow enough time to get settled in before the festivities begin.

If you find more affordable round-trip flights through Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO), you also have the option to book a domestic flight or train to Lecce ahead of the trip.

Our trip ends in Rome and you are free to depart at anytime on Day 8 - or hop on over to another nearby FTLO trip.

Will there be luggage limitations?

+

-

We highly recommend packing light, as you'll be responsible for carrying your own luggage throughout the trip. While a standard European carry-on and one checked bag are generally acceptable, keep in mind that you'll be moving between cities via private & public transport and navigating narrow streets, cobblestones, and hotel stairs. For ease and comfort, rolling suitcases or travel backpacks are ideal.

Any recommendations if I'd like to extend my time abroad?

+

-

If you’ve got a few days to keep traveling, you can head north to Tuscany & Rome, catch a local flight to Sardinia, take a train west toward Barcelona & the South of France, or stay in the Mediterranean and join our Greek Islands trip.
