Day 1 – Vilnius, Lithuania
Welcome to the Baltics!
Our adventure begins in Vilnius, Lithuania's capital and the first stop on our journey through the Baltics. After arriving and settling into our hotel in the heart of Old Town, we'll meet up with our trip leader and fellow travelers for a quick introduction before heading out to explore.
We'll get our first taste of Vilnius on a guided walk through its historic center, passing Cathedral Square, Pilies Street, St. Anne's Church, and the city's old Jewish Quarter. It's a great introduction to the city and its history, with plenty more to discover tomorrow.
Then it's time for our welcome dinner, where we'll dig into traditional Lithuanian cuisine in a historic cellar and get to know the crew we'll be traveling with for the next eight days.

Trip Notes
Read through helpful flight details, trip notes and details about our Estonia, Latvia & Lithuania Trip.
Arrive
Fly into Vilnius Airport (VNO) on Day 1 of your trip.
We recommend arriving by 1 PM to give yourself enough time to get to the hotel by 2:30PM, settle in, and join the group for our welcome activities.
Depart
Fly out of Tallinn Airport (TLL) anytime on Day 8 of your trip.
There are no scheduled group activities after breakfast, so you're free to depart whenever works best for your travel plans. Though, we always recommend flying out as late as possible to have a final farewell, solo moment.
Private Room Upgrades
Traveling solo but prefer your own space? Private room upgrades are available for an additional $799, subject to availability. Otherwise, accommodations are shared with a fellow FTLO traveler.
Dietary Restrictions
We'll enjoy plenty of traditional Baltic cuisine throughout the trip, including local specialties, food tastings, and group meals. While some dietary restrictions can be accommodated, vegan travelers may find their options more limited, particularly during traditional meals and countryside experiences. Please let us know about any dietary restrictions before booking so we can discuss your needs.
Accommodations
We'll spend seven nights in a mix of comfortable, centrally located hotels and a historic countryside manor house. In Vilnius, Riga, and Tallinn, we'll stay within walking distance of the cities' Old Town attractions, restaurants, and shops. We'll also spend one night at a manor house in Viljandi, Estonia, where you'll have time to enjoy the property and its spa facilities.
Visas
Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia are all part of the Schengen Area. U.S. passport holders can generally visit for up to 90 days within a 180-day period without a traditional tourist visa. Entry authorization requirements may change, so check the latest ETIAS and other entry requirements before traveling. If you're traveling on a passport from another country, please check the requirements that apply to you.
Weather
The Baltics experience distinct seasons. June and August bring mild to warm weather and long days, while September and October offer cooler temperatures and fall colors. December brings cold weather, festive holiday markets, and the possibility of snow. Pack comfortable walking shoes and layers year-round.
Itinerary Changes
We've carefully planned this itinerary to give you an incredible experience across all three Baltic countries. Occasionally, weather, local conditions, or other circumstances may require us to adjust the schedule or substitute an activity. We'll always do our best to maintain the overall experience and keep you informed of any meaningful changes.
Passport Requirements
You'll need a valid passport to travel to Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia. For U.S. travelers, your passport should be valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen Area, although we recommend having at least six months of validity remaining.
Packing Tips
Pack comfortable walking shoes for exploring cobblestone Old Towns, medieval castles, and countryside trails. Layers and a waterproof jacket are a must, as Baltic weather can change throughout the day. Bring activewear for our bogshoe hike, a swimsuit for the sauna experience, and a few nice outfits for dinners out. If you're traveling in December, don't forget a warm winter coat, gloves, a hat, and insulated boots.
How much should I budget for meals and extras?
+
-
Your trip includes seven breakfasts, five lunches, and five dinners, so quite a few of your meals are already covered. You'll want to budget for the remaining meals, drinks, snacks, souvenirs, and any personal expenses.
As a general planning estimate, we'd recommend setting aside around $150 to $250 for meals not included in the itinerary, plus additional spending money for drinks, shopping, and extras. Your total will depend on your preferences.
I have dietary restrictions. Will there be options for me?
+
-
Baltic cuisine features plenty of meat, dairy, rye bread, potatoes, and other hearty local ingredients. While vegetarian options are available in the larger cities, vegan and more restrictive diets can be challenging during some of our traditional dining experiences.
Please let us know about any dietary restrictions before booking so we can help you understand what to expect. We'll do our best to accommodate your needs, but we can't guarantee every dietary requirement can be met at every stop.
Any recommendations if I'd like to extend my stay?
+
-
Absolutely! If you've got a few extra days, there are some great ways to see more of the region.
Keep the good times rolling! Join our Amsterdam trip for a few more days of canals, local culture, and exploring one of Europe's most fun cities. Or, keep the Nordic adventures going with our Copenhagen, Oslo & Stockholm trip, where you'll discover Scandinavian cities, incredible landscapes, and even more local experiences with a new travel crew.
Helsinki , Finland
Just a ferry ride from Tallinn, Helsinki is an easy addition to your trip. Spend a couple of days exploring Finnish design, waterfront neighborhoods, cafés, and more sauna culture.
Lahemaa National Park , Estonia
If you loved the Estonian countryside, consider spending more time exploring Lahemaa National Park, known for its forests, coastal villages, hiking trails, and historic manor houses.
More Time in Tallinn
Not ready to leave? Stick around for a few more days to explore Tallinn's creative neighborhoods, try more local restaurants, visit museums, and enjoy the city at your own pace.
What are the accommodations like?
+
-
We've selected a mix of comfortable, well-located accommodations that make it easy to explore and enjoy the trip.
In Vilnius, Riga, and Tallinn, we'll stay in hotels conveniently located near the historic city centers, giving you plenty of opportunities to explore on foot. One of the highlights is our overnight stay at a historic manor house in the Estonian countryside, complete with access to spa facilities.
You'll typically share a room with another FTLO traveler unless you book a private room upgrade.
What's the pace of the itinerary?
+
-
This is a fairly active trip, with plenty to see and do across three countries in eight days. We'll explore historic cities on foot, travel through the countryside, visit medieval castles, and head outdoors for a guided bogshoe hike.
There are a few longer travel days as we make our way from Lithuania through Latvia to Estonia, but we've built in worthwhile stops along the way. You'll also have free time in Vilnius, Riga, and Tallinn to explore independently, relax, or hang out with your new friends.
It's a great fit for travelers who enjoy a full itinerary with a balance of organized experiences and time to themselves.
What should I pack?
+
-
Comfortable walking shoes are a must! We'll spend plenty of time exploring historic Old Towns, medieval castles, and the countryside, so you'll want shoes that can handle cobblestone streets and outdoor adventures.
We recommend bringing layers, a waterproof jacket, comfortable clothes for outdoor activities, and a swimsuit for our sauna experience. You'll also want a few outfits for group dinners and evenings out.
If you're traveling in December, pack a warm winter coat, gloves, a hat, and insulated footwear. For summer departures, lighter layers and sun protection are helpful.
When should I arrive and depart, and how do I get to the hotel?
+
-
Your trip begins in Vilnius, Lithuania, and ends in Tallinn, Estonia.
Plan to fly into Vilnius Airport (VNO) by 1 PM on Day 1 so you have enough time to reach the hotel before our group activities begin. On Day 8, you can depart from Tallinn Airport (TLL) at any time.
Airport transfers aren't included, so you'll arrange your own transportation to and from the hotels. We'll share the arrival details before your trip so you know exactly where to go.
What's the vibe of this trip?
+
-
Think medieval castles, beautiful European capitals, really good food, countryside escapes, and experiences that get you closer to the local culture.
This trip is especially great for curious travelers who love history, food, exploring on foot, and discovering destinations a little outside the usual European travel circuit. We'll balance cultural experiences and outdoor activities with free time to wander, relax, and enjoy the cities.
And, of course, there's the FTLO crew. Most of our travelers join solo, so you'll have a group of like-minded people to explore with from day one.
What's the weather like?
+
-
It depends on when you visit! The Baltics have four distinct seasons, and each brings something different to the experience.
June: 50–72°F – Expect pleasant early summer weather, long daylight hours, green landscapes
August: 55–75°F – Expect mild to warm days, long daylight hours
September: 45–65°F – Expect cooler weather, early fall colors
October: 35–55°F – Expect crisp fall days, colorful foliage, some rain
December: 20–40°F – Expect cold winter weather, short days, possible snow
These are approximate seasonal ranges rather than forecasts. Since we'll be exploring three countries and spending time outdoors, we recommend packing layers and preparing for changing weather.
