Welcome to Georgia!

Georgia is a place that knows how to bring people together. Around the table, over homemade khinkali and local wine. In family homes, where a traditional supra comes with stories and plenty of toasts. And out in the Caucasus, where mountain roads lead to monasteries, valleys, and some seriously incredible views.
Over nine days, we’ll experience it all, from the historic streets of Tbilisi to the vineyards and markets of Kakheti and the mountains of Stepantsminda. We’ll taste wines from one of the world’s oldest winemaking cultures, cook with locals, learn traditional crafts, and hike through the Caucasus Mountains.
It’s a trip for travelers in their 30s who want to experience a destination through its food, people, traditions, and landscapes, with a great crew to share it all with.

Day 1 – Tbilisi
Hello, Georgia
Welcome to Tbilisi. Once you’ve checked in and had a chance to settle, we’ll get the group together for our first official hello over a welcome drink. This is your chance to meet the people you’ll be exploring, road tripping, enjoying awesome meals and probably exchanging a lot of photos with over the next nine days.
From there, we’ll head out for our first dinner together and get an introduction to the local flavors that are going to become a pretty important part of this trip. Georgian meals are made for sharing, so consider this your first taste of both the country and the crew. After dinner, head back to the hotel or keep the night going with your new travel friends.

Dietary Restrictions

Passport Requirements
U.S. travelers need a valid passport with at least six months of validity beyond the arrival date and at least one blank page for an entry stamp.
Weather
Spring and fall are great times to explore Georgia, with daytime temperatures in Tbilisi and the lowlands generally ranging from the 60s to 80s°F (15 to 28°C). Stepantsminda and other mountain areas are noticeably cooler, especially in the evenings, so layers and a warm jacket are essential.
Packing Tips
Be ready for city strolls, vineyard visits, and mountain trails! Hiking shoes or supportive sneakers, light layers, a warmer jacket, and a rain jacket will keep you comfortable through changing spring and fall weather. Bring a few nice outfits for dinners and wine tastings, plus a scarf and clothing that covers your shoulders and knees for monastery visits.
Accommodations
You’ll spend eight nights in a mix of modern hotels throughout Georgia, including three nights in Tbilisi, two nights in Kisiskhevi, and three nights in Stepantsminda. Standard accommodations are shared twin rooms with one fellow traveler.
Itinerary Changes
The itinerary may shift due to weather, local conditions, or traveler feedback. If we’re unable to run a planned activity, we’ll work with our local partners to arrange a suitable alternative.
What’s the vibe of this trip?
+
-
Cultural, foodie, and outdoorsy. This is a trip for the traveler who wants to understand a destination through the people, food, traditions, and landscapes that make it different. One day you’re learning Georgian calligraphy in Tbilisi, another you’re sharing a supra with a local family, and a few days later you’re riding through the Caucasus in a 4WD.
It’s especially strong on culture and food, with the trip rated 8/10 for culture and 7.5/10 for foodie experiences. Nightlife is much less of a focus at 3/10.
How much should I budget for meals and extras?
+
-
Eight breakfasts, five lunches, and four dinners are included, along with the food and drink experiences specifically noted in the itinerary.
You’ll want extra spending money for the remaining meals, drinks, souvenirs, optional activities, airport transfers, and personal expenses. We recommend budgeting between $200 - $300 but it’s totally up to you!
I have dietary restrictions. Will there be options for me?
+
-
Vegetarians should have plenty of options throughout the trip, though Georgian cuisine uses a lot of bread, cheese, and meat, so vegan and gluten-free travelers may find choices more limited. Let us know about your dietary needs well before departure so we can work with our local partners to do our best to accommodate you wherever possible.
What are the accommodations like?
+
-
You’ll stay in modern hotels throughout the trip, with three nights in Tbilisi, two in Georgia’s wine region, and three in Stepantsminda. Unless you book a private room upgrade, you’ll share a twin room with one other FTLO traveler.
What should I pack for Georgia?
+
-
Layers are your friend on this one. Tbilisi and Kakheti can be warm during the day, while Stepantsminda and the Caucasus Mountains are noticeably cooler, especially at night. Bring comfortable walking shoes, casual clothes for city and food experiences, layers for changing temperatures, and a warm jacket for the mountains. A scarf and clothing that covers your shoulders and knees will also come in handy for monastery visits.
What's the weather like in Georgia?
+
-
Expect mild to warm weather in Tbilisi and Kakheti during spring and fall, generally ranging from the 60s to 80s°F during the day. Once we head into the Caucasus, temperatures drop and evenings can get chilly. Bring layers so you’re ready for both.
Any recommendations if I'd like to extend my time abroad?
+
-
Tbilisi is the easiest place to add extra time since the trip begins and ends there. An extra day or two would give you more time for the city’s sulfur baths, neighborhoods, restaurants, cafes, and anything you bookmarked during the trip but didn’t get around to.
When should I arrive and depart, and how do I get to the hotel?
+
-
Fly into Tbilisi International Airport (TBS) and plan to arrive by 1:00 PM on Day 1. You can fly out of TBS at any time on Day 9. Airport transfers are not included, so you’ll make your own way between the airport and hotel.
What’s the pace of the itinerary?
+
-
This is one of our more active itineraries in terms of pace, rated an 8 out of 10. We’ll cover three distinct parts of Georgia over nine days, with road trips, city exploration, food and cultural experiences, and mountain sightseeing balanced with free evenings and a full free day in Tbilisi.
Physical activity itself is rated a moderate8 out of 10, so the pace comes more from how much we’re seeing than from strenuous activity.
